SD Card reader x61t, Ubunu Gutsy

#1 Post by aliencam » Sat Dec 29, 2007 1:27 am

hello. I just got a samsung i760 pda phone, and i understand i can't sync it with my computer, or connect it at all (ive been trying to just "see" the device as a USB storage, but wm6 doesn't do that apparently) so i've been trying to install some software through an SD card. However, I can't get Ubuntu to read my SD card reader.

i tried the "ubuntu 6.1" instructions on here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_ge ... RD_working

but everything else I read online says that that SD card reader works out of the box... all I get when i insert an SD card is the light blinks green once, and my processor throttling goes up to 1.8ghz (i have it set to "ondemand"), then nothing. i can't even mount /dev/mmcblk0 (it doesn't exist) .

so i don't know why it doesn't work... has anyone else gotten it to work?

First, I'd suggest you update to a recent linux distribution. Will save tons of headache with newer hardware.

Check /var/log/messages for any error messages.

the short answer is, it may be the particular sd card...
cf: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=51584

the reader should work out of the box. do you have another card you can try? (e.g. a 1gb non-transflash (i.e. normal size sd) card)
go away.

i am using a newer distribution, i'm using ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy. i just tried the 6.1 instructions for edgy just in case it was still an issue...

I have tried 2 different SD cards, one was a sandisk adapter with a PQI 1 gb SD-micro in it, and the other was a 128 MB PQI SD card (back from when mp3 players first came out!)

i don't have a different brand of card adapter with me (left the adapters at college over winter break) , but i'll try different SD micro cards (my brothers have a san disk, and some other brand SD cards)

/var/log has a lot of files, i assume i'm looking for a mmcblk0 log, but nothing has that in the title.

I found one that works, a Lexar adapter works instantly, and "out of the box" as everyone says... strange that neither the SanDisk nor PQI ones work... oh well, thanks everyone, I didn't even realize certain ones don't work.
