Trying to get SuSE 10.3 to run on ThinkPad i Series 1300

#1 Post by br_zak » Sat Dec 29, 2007 10:52 am

Hello,

I'm trying to install SuSE 10.3 using Live CD GNOME on a ThinkPad i Series 1300 1171-8XU. The hardware configuration:

PIII 750MHz (256KB)
119MB RAM, 18.6 GB HDD
13.3 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD
8x4x24 CD-RW

I've gotten this far in the installation:

Loading KIWI CD Boot System

-------> Including required kernel modules ...
-------> Probing module: pata_ali
-------> Probing module: alim15x3
-------> Probing module: ata_generic
-------> Creating device nodes with udev

then nothing else happens.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Respectfully - Zak

Hi,
try to create a swap partition before the installation, because 119 MB is really small for these kind of bloated All-In-One-DVDs.

cheers Micha

Btw. Who actually understands a manual if one really needs advice? So keep on reading the fine manuals :wink:

If you're not married to SuSE, I suggest you get an Ubuntu Alternate CD. It runs on 32MB RAM. (Fedora's text-mode installer requires 128MB, and their GUI installer recommends 512MB. I'm not sure about SuSE.)

It should install the full GUI environment for you, but GNOME desktop may be a bit much for 119MB. You might look at Xubuntu or XFCE on Ubuntu or an even lighter desktop manager.

... and welcome to the forum!
