suspend / hibernate not working in ubuntu 7.10
I've tried both 'Suspend' and 'Hibernate' from the shut-down menu, but all I get is a dark screen with a flashing cursor, solid power and battery leds, and a flashing 'moon' led. Nothing will take it out of this state except a hard shutdown. Can someone point me in the right direction to get this to work?

Paul:
You can start by examining the configuration files:
/etc/default/acpi-support
/etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf
Examine the settings in the first file for:
ACPI_SLEEP
ACPI_HIBERNATE
HIBERNATE_MODE
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE
and the ones in the second file for hibernation settings.
You may have to experiment to find those that work best. Or, check the Ubuntu forums for hardware similar to yours.

I also ran into this, you have a few options:
1)Revert to Feisty
2)Revert to Feisty Kernel (only problem is losing the accelerated drivers, so this sucks)
3)Switch to Radeon Drivers, works ok, a little slow, but i could not get 1680x1050 to work
4) Build a custom kernel. I did this and both sleep and suspend now work. There are instructions at the link below, it's pretty easy. The instructions are mostly correct, but it doesn't tell you every program to install (for example i did not have fakeroot installed, so when i ran that command, apt told me to install it). But even with that it only took me about 2 hours to install (over an hour of that was to compile it)

(added below after kolo posted it
)
5) Jump forward to the Hardy Heron Kernel.

If you do 4 or 5, make sure you edit your /etc/default/acpi-support file with these changes.

Another alternative may be to jump forward to kernel 2.6.24 since most of the problems were caused by kernel 2.6.22
In searching for a solution on my machine (different hardware) I ran across this bug report which suggests doing that and gives a procedure for downloading the new kernel from the Ubuntu repository (will save you the trouble of building a custom kernel).
Look for the post of 2007/12/15 by Leann Ogasawara for instructions. Full disclosure -- I have not tried this yet.
