Does anybody successfully install "ati-driver-installer-8-3-x86.x86_64.run" to ati radeon 9600 (RV350)? My machine is T42. I followed the instruction at "Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide" from google searching. Especially, in method 2, once I compiled the driver, install it and when reboot it, I have a flickering LCD screen. Also, the graphic card performance is very low. I found a nice script to install a graphic card driver install, called envy. Unfortunately, the same thing happened. I appreciate if anyone help me.

That whole series of proprietary drivers from ATI have caused many a problem for Linux users over the years. Unless you really, absolutely need unadulterated 3d functionality, I'd suggest you simply use the ati compatible vid module instead of the driver. It was always hit and miss with ATI's stuff.
You could also check out gentoo forums for solutions (linux is all the same at the core, so no need to constrict yourself with only one source of information when dealing with tweaking linux). Why gentoo? Because more users there can offer much more comprehensive hands-on help than the majority of users of other distros because they (gentoo-ers) compile most of the distro from source as opposed to ready-made packages. Hence, you're more likely to get some good tips from that user base than elsewhere.
