tethering a blackberry to a Linux machine

#1 Post by Bfskinnerpunk » Sat Mar 22, 2008 4:08 pm

I have taken the leap into cellular 'net service by purchasing the tethering plan for my verizon blackberry 8830.

Is this going to be a problem with Linux? Surfing the net a bit more safely is a big reason for thinking about making the switch to Linux.

I know it was impossible on the Mac w/o windows.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about tethering with an actual USB cable... not bluetooth.

Probably not straightforward... It's been done before though. Do you know how it will be connecting exactly? Hopefully there will be an applicable GUI for the way you're going to do it.

Some links:
Hopefully this'll work with your service
One of the hard ways of doing it

I use some verizon netaccess software that cames with the service.

It may require that i have the blackberry sync software, too... not sure because I have always had that installed.

There's plenty of howtos on the net and Blackberry Forums on this. The google gave this one: http://wiki.colar.net/tethering_with_bl ... l_on_linux

You won't be using Verizon's software, only their username, pass, and network. Once your phone is configured as a modem you can use wvdial, pppd, chat, or whatever to handshake with the carrier. In case you're wondering, this is the same basic process with just about every USB modem-supported phone -- Blackberry, Blackjack, Q, etc. (iPhone being the only exception that comes to mind, requiring bluetooth and hackary, but it's also not supported as a modem.)
