I've been installing Linux on and off for the past 4 years. I just received my Thinkpad and have been itching to install Ubuntu. So...
I did a fresh install of Hardy (beta) last week and I'm impressed with how little I had to do to get it up and running compared with previous trials. Graphics has always required a bit of work and this one was no exception. I think I only had to hit the command line once.
Issues found so far:
Network Manager doesn't find hidden SSIDs (I have to enter the SSID and key in every time - I just unhid my SSID)
The WiFi Led doesn't light up.
Active Disk Protection - haven't figured that one out yet.
Compiz works fine - I really like it!
So...

I'm planning on doing a fresh install once the release is official. I know that ThinkWiki has a how to on installing Hardy but it's really just an upgrade HowTo not a clean install.

Is anyone else going to do a fresh install when Hardy is released? If so, I'm thinking about Having a thread dedicated to getting it up on the T61. Any takers?

But recompiling the kernel, just to get a led to light up is probably not worth it.

I've read the thinkwiki article on tp_smapi. It a little too technical at this point for me so I need to do some additional study on it. It's on my list of to-do's.

I haven't recompiled the kernel before so I might just try it on the WiFi LED patch - don't know how to do that either but I'll give it a try at some point.

I have an X61s running the Hardy 8.04 beta. I plan on reinstalling once the release candidate is out at least.

I have been having issues with screen brightness not being adjustable. Anyone finding anything similar?

But all in all I am excited for this release, some of the improvements are really nice.

Brightness control is working fine on the T61.

The WiFi LED is working on Fedora with latest drivers. I expect an update will get it to work with Ubuntu too.

And please consider making a new page on ThinkWiki for a clean install. A lot more people will look there than here.

I thought I read somewhere that tp_smapi was included or will be included into the next kernel that will be released with the final version of Ubuntu.

I did a clean install of Hardy last night.
I downloaded the latest image and installed from the CD.
Interestingly, it did a distribution upgrade so I suspect that the CDs aren't the latest beta.

I let it do all the updates before I changed any settings.

Everything seemed to work out of the box except what I mentioned above:
WiFi led light.
Hard Drive active shock protection.
WiFi won't connect to hidden SSID automatically I have to enter the ssid and password manually for it to connect.

Compiz kept crashing X hard - so I turned it off for the time being until I can get some time to figure out what's going on.

I've been running Compiz for several hours and X hasn't crashed.

EarloftheWest: Thanks for the information, . I am still waiting for the official release, but it is good to know that the beta(rc) is working quite well on T61. I am wondering if suspend and hibernate are working well under Hardy with the Nvidia card? I was able to get suspend working in Gutsy, but not the hibernate.

I will be writing up a guide on how to do a clean hardy install, but I won't be able to do it until next week (finals)

I'll also be compiling a kernel for lower power, the accelerometer, and a few other things that don't work by default for my x61 Tablet (but it should be the same for most things)

I'll post a link to it here if someone else doesn't do a better one first, and I'll put it on thinkwiki if there isn't one already.

When you build the kernel, can you document how you do it (?)(if it's not too much trouble) because I'd like the experience myself.

Eagerly awaiting your guide! And "low power" solutions. Good luck with your final exam(s). Kind of cruel for the Ubuntu team to pick April for a release date. All those poor students trying to study by day and compile code by night . . .

I noticed that with my T61p hardy heron turns the cpu fan on and it remains on constantly.

Humm....

I have the non-p T61 and my fan seems to run as normal.

Controlling the fan is on my 'figure it out' list. I'm sure there's a way to control the temperature and the fan speed. When I get some time, I'll be researching that also.

Better constantly on then constantly off. No burnt out GPUs :)

Here is my partial guide. I know this really isn't what most are looking for, but I wrote this up for myself and a few of my friends who wanted to know how I have ubuntu set up exactly.

I have not added power management (actually it looks like powertop is the only thing short of when I recompile a kernel) or the more drastic changes to the desktop look. But this does have the tablet working and I meant to have the fingerprint reader working by the time I posted this, but I have somewhere to go to right now. The fingerprint reader should be included in there by midnight. (GMT -7 midnight)
