T60 ati X1400 WSXGA+ 1680x1050 resolution, compiz, etc

I have UBUNTU (7.10) running fine using XGL and the restricted drivers. I'd prefer NOT to have to use XGL, however. I know there have been some new ati drivers released in the meantime, so my question for anyone who has a similar/identical system is: Have you been able to get the new drivers to use 1680x1050 resolution as well as getting compiz to run without loading XGL? If so, how? I've surfed through UBUNTU FORUMS, but haven't seen a clear-cut/unambiguous answer to my question, so thus far I'm leaving things alone, since they work (albeit more slowly than I'd like).
