I found a link at the fedora site to a Windows app. which will install Fedora 9 Live on a USB Flash drive with persistence (that is, the capability to save changes on your usb key).

My early impressions of F9 are very positive, and it works nicely on my R60. I was particularly impressed with how easily it recognized the internal atheros wireless card. No need for drivers ... and WPA encryption is ready to go - no need to configure wpa_supplicant.

On the downside, existing ATI drivers (fglrx) are apparently incompatible with the new kernel in F9, so we're going to have to wait for 3D and video capabilities.

Tried Fedora 9 too

I did a test install of Fedora 9 (64 bit) on a partition on my x61 this weekend and it worked almost flawlessly (I'm posting now while using it). It didn't detect the Thinkpad specific volume buttons like Ubuntu did when I tried it a few days ago, but then Ubuntu x64 would often freeze on startup with ACPI errors and occasionally fail with "Kernel direct mapping file" errors, so at least Fedora 9 seems far more reliable. I'm still looking for the perfect Linux distro though, which is no doubt an endless quest :)

Running F9 with KDE 4 on my T41p now, and have been for a week, getting the wireless card working well with WPA was a bit of an issue but madwifi drivers fixed the problem and a couple of other tweaks.

Have been using Ubuntu for the last 2-3 years, wanted to try something totally different.
