hello everyone. i have an old t22 that some how reached my front door. i had ubuntu on it. oh and the specs are 256mb ram 30 gig HDD 600-700MHz (i dont rember) but my inverter died like two months ago and i am just getting one now. but i have ubuntu on it and it was faster than a fresh install of XP. but i hate windows. i had ubuntu 7.10 on it for about 6 months and then the inverter blew. but right before the inverter went i could not boot into ubuntu i would get a black screen after the ubuntu logo and no one could help me not even anyone on the ubuntu forums (thats like 2 million people). even any of the "buntus" worked Xubuntu and kubuntu did not work. they did not have an answer. my video card is supported. every thing is good. now that i am getting an inverter. do you think ubuntu is going to work? did the inverter have anything to do with it.
also i think i will try mint linux insted of ubuntu

also i need wireless to work if you guys are going to point me tords a new "flavor" of linux. i have a Ralink wireless G PCMIA card. it worked in ubuntu 7.10 and it did not work in 7.04 and puppylinux even with other programs or anything i did

Welcome to the forum!

I use the same Ralink card that you have, and would suggest that you give PC Linux OS (version 2006) a shot, it should run well on your T22.

The distro I normally use is Linux Mint (Daryna) but my T22 doesn't like it whatsoever...could never get it to work.

And you may want to max out your RAM at 512Mb, most Linux distros are RAM-hungry.

on my t22 I'm running debian: using neither gnome or KDE as window
manager, but fvwm: snappy performance.

You need PC100 RAM, or low-density PC133, regular PC133 won't work in a T22.

David, you might try Ubuntu 8.04 as a fresh install. I have a T-20 that would boot to the Ubuntu logo then go to black screen. The only way that I could get the os up was to boot to this point three consecutive times. I did a distro upgrade to *.04 and still had this problem. I later did a fresh install of 8.04 and now I boot right first time every time.

I used to have a T22 and ran debian sarge (3.10) on it after trying ubuntu 6.10 (edgy) and 7.04 (feisty). I used fluxbox as my WM and it ran great on the T22. I had 512 MB RAM though ...

I'd anyday prefer a custom install of debian over ubuntu for any machine ...

I'd second something like Debian or something a little more "lightweight" than Ubuntu, etc... There are probably tons of howtos on getting your hardware working for stuff like Debian.

If you want a lean, fast, and customized distribution, Gentoo is your friend. And after you're done installing it, you'll probably have a WAY better idea of how Linux and UNIX in general are put together. There is a very detailed handbook at www.gentoo.org.

I still recommend Debian, lightweight somewhat simple and perfect for cases like this.

As far as I remember the xorg version you have gives a blank screen with 7.10 as well as a few other distros with the Savage driver.

Google for the correct line to edit in your xorg.conf file I think I got round it by ALT F2 to change console and change the horizontal and vertical refresh rates.
