760xl win95, how boot to live dsl cd?

#1 Post by roky » Wed Jul 02, 2008 4:47 pm

i've tried out dsl on my desktop win98, and on my 600e win2k, just to try out linux, and really like it -- but can';t use this live cd on the 760xl, which is where i really woiuld like to try it -- if it works ok, would then just get rid of win95, but wanted to try it out first

went into thinkpad easy-startup and changed the boot order, but it wouldn't boot from the cd, which is where a floppy would be

also, if anyone is into recommendations, would be interested in what linux you might recommend for my computers, listed below

thanks

If you can connect both the floppy and CD drives, try smart boot manager to see if that floppy will then "boot" the CD.

Otherwise, there are some distributions that will boot from floppy and install over a wired network.

I can't recommend a distro for your 760XL, but my 750P is running Ubuntu 6.10LTS, text-mode server only, and that machine has 36MB RAM.

For the 600E, just about anything will be fine. I'm a fan of Fedora because I know how to administer it better than Ubuntu/Debian, and because it seems to have more-recent packages, and by default (like Ubuntu) has only open-source packages.

no floppy, was replaced with a cd

but is your 750p also running windows? - so far i think part of my problem has been running the live cds, with with windows still installed -- even on the 600e, i've only been able to get dsl to work from cd -- when i tried to run the live cds of ubuntu and knoppix, had problems -- yes, they were burned at 4x on sony media -- so maybe if i install a small linux to hdd, using my orinoco card -- then remove win95?

My 750P is not also running Windows, but that shouldn't have anything to do with anything.

The recent live CDs do have some serious requirements, like 256MB RAM or something, so be sure you're OK on that front. (They also require a Pentium, which should be OK for you, but not for my 750P.)
