I use flash-player which provides both a browser plugin and a separate player. It is proprietary so you'll have to look in non-oss repositories...what distro are you using? I'm pretty sure popular choices like mplayer and vlc won't handle swf files, though VLC can play FLV (flash) files.

Wait....here are few you might try:

swfdec - browser plugin and standalone player
swftools - SWF toolkit for both creation and manipulation...might be a more than you need

Thanks, I couldn't get flashplayer 9 to play .SWF files. I may have had it installed wrong, but I just upgraded to Firefox 3 and reinstalled Flashplayer 9 and it worked. It also started working in Thunderbird. A friend of mine sent me this screen cleaner.
