I have been using Fedora on my X40 since I bought it, that is in April 2004. At that time you had to compile several drivers by hand (e.g. madwifi) but as of today Fedora works on X40 out of the box: no custom script, nothing apart from the installation of tpb (think pad buttons) which can be done in one line command.
yum install tpb
Everything works (function keys, bluetooth, etc) apart from hdaps that requires custom installation. So for newbies with an X40 Fedora is a safe bet (I do not mean the only one, but a good one for sure).
