I've got the latest Ubunu on my T40 alongside XP, but I sure like the looks of gOS. is there a package I can download to get that look and function or do I have to go all in with the gOs3 Beta6??

Thanks,

David

It's just Enlightenment 17 with the multiple desktop manager and icon dock together, plus Google Desktop/Gadgets for Linux. E17 is not in Debian Unstable yet (I am not sure E17 is being actively developed, since their page has not had an update in some time) so I doubt it is in Ubuntu.

Still, I would suggest XFCE instead of Enlightenment, though Enlightenment is certainly fast. You can place the dock ("panel") and the multiple desktop manager at the bottom of your desktop, and more importantly, the bling and composting previously provided by Enlightenment is better done and more extensible in compiz-fusion anyway. Plus XFCE is a stable, nice, and fast desktop and you can still install Google Desktop/Gadgets on top of it.

David,

My apologies -- I was going from my experience with gOS 2.0 which was used when looking for a good distribution for a non-Linux savvy friend's laptop. gOS 3.0 moved to Gnome (which is smart for stability/standardization compared to E17, but I still suggest XFCE for the reasons above), and your only additions should be the Avant Window Navigator (apt-get install avant-window-navigator) and Google Desktop/Gadgets (you'll find tarballs and .debs at Google Code).

Should you not be aware, indexing your harddrive (such as via Goog Desktop) will eat away battery life, but like most things in Linux, this is tweak-able.

Good luck with finding your perfect desktop :)
