Hello

This is my first post to the forum and I do apologise my english in advance, it isn't my native language so there can be errors in text

Three days ago i purchased My first, working IBM Thinkpad. I almost immediatly threw Ubuntu linux at it and everything worked out of box. Suspending, Hibernation, adjusting sound and brightness with on-screen symbols, even Fn+F5 for switching wireless on-off.

Now only things i need to know are these:

1) Is it possible to start-up with wireless off, I usually use a wired network so i don't need wireless to be up right away.

2) Another thing is, I am not sure if my processor is doing this Speed-step at all. It seems (by Ubuntu resource monitor) that it is at 1,6 GHz all the time.

I would be very thankful if someone could give me some details in this matters.

assuming you have an intel card look here
for speedstep, make sure that the cpufreq modules are installed. check it with

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep "cpu"
if it doesn't return any lines, it's not loaded.
i'd be very surprised if it wasn't since this should load automatically on all popular distros.
right-click on the gnome panel and add the cpu frequency monitor, that will show you when the cpu ramps up and down with speedstep.

Thank you

I do have an intel card like you assumed. Although mine is 2100, I think I'll try that one out with correct driver name. Shall see if those power-management features are working with this card as well. Thinkwiki didn't mention anything about that in section Ipw2100.
