Another bad problem on ubuntu !!!

hello

i have another problem on ubuntu 8,04 using IBM thinkpad r52

my laptop shutdown always because of high heat , the heat reach always 93 C degree , i see the fan speed is too low , it was working good on windows

is there is any way to increase it as i searched alot on the internet but no way worked with me !

help me plz

First thing to do is to remove all the dust in the CPU fan.

Many people blow compressed air into the fan vents but there's a real danger that the air causes the fan to run faster than it's designed to resulting in permanent bearing damage.

It's better to strip down the TP, remove the CPU fan assembly, and clean it out by hand.
This is very easy to do as follows:

Download the R52 Hardware maintenance manual:

To access the Fan Assembly you need to remove the following:

1 The Battery (page 76)
2. The HDD (page 79)
3. The keyboard (page 82)
4. The keyboard bezel (page 92)
5. CPU fan Assembly (page 103)

Clean off all the old heatsink compound from the CPU and Fan Assembly by rubbing rather than scraping which could damage the components.
I use methylated spirits on a cloth to soften the old compound.

Clean out all the dust and fluff etc from the fan. I'm not familiar with that heatsink but it may be possible to strip it down and get inside it and carefully clean the fan blades with a soft brush (toothbrush is good - only dont use it on your teeth afterwards!!).

Reassembly:
Apply new heatsink compound in a thin layer over the CPU heatsink. Use Arctic Silver (right name?) if you can get it.

Reassemble the TP in the reverse order and retest.

If it's still overheating we'll look at the software side.

hello

i opened inside my laptop , and this is my first time to do that , and i cleaned fan , and i detected that this material that u put on processor and fan that cold them was very weak , i put new material on both of them

and i cleaned my laptop and did everything right , there were alot of dust inside it

anyway , i turned on my laptop again to see how fan will work ,
i have program on ubuntu called thinpad control fan , i dont know how to use it but it tell me fan speed and temprature now

the fan speed still the sam 3400 RPM , i mean in this range
but the laptop speed came dont between 60-70 C degree and sometimes arrive 85 , as it was between , 85 - 95 degree before i clean , but i think this happened because of material that cold processor , i dont know what is its name ,

but fan speed still low .

I'm not familiar with the R52, so I may be wrong here, but can you go into the bios (F1 when starting the TP) and set the CPU frequency to manual instead of automatic, and set a lower CPU frequency.

See what happens then.

no , i get useful of that , the speakers sound in my laptop was low , when i opened it inside , i found that the cable is not put good in its place , so now voice became high

, and heat became little low because of material on fan and processor .

there is no thing like that on my thinkpad bios , but there is cpu management : automatic / or not automatic , it was automatic , and i turned it to not automatic , to see wut will happen , but i see it is the same .

In there it looks like your fan should be running at 4500rpm +

Note that the R52 there is running Windows but even so your 80 degrees ++ is way too high.

can i change fan and get another one to work good !! , because its RPM is too low

as i want to change processor soon

Been doing some research in Ubuntu forums, and there appears to be a bug relating to CPU temperature and laptops.

There's an excellent little CPU frequency control applet here:

Reads as follows:

* Right-click on your top or bottom panel
* click on Add to panel
* select and add CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor

In a terminal run

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets

Answer YES to the "run as root" question.

Now you should be able to left click on the cpu frequency scaling monitor and set the speed of your cpu. There are some presets in there as well, I just set mine to "Ondemand" that keep's the fan quite and the performance acceptable

Have a play around with the settings and see if the temperature decreases.

yeah , i know this one , someone told me about it before , but it didnt work good with heat .

after i cleaned my laptop till now , it didn't shutdown cuz of heat , hope it will work like that always ,

what is ur opinion about changing fan ?

Because it's not possible to say if your fan is working properly, I would suggest trying another fan.

Your problem has also been very helpful for me since I've learnt much more about Linux and Thinkpads.

yeah , ppl learn always , which version of linux u use ? !

i still have only bluetooth Fn+F5 problem , then i can go on linux

I have Ubuntu 8.04, the same as yourself - & the 'interesting' thing is that when testing the commands for the temperature controls I've now got a problem.
My CPU fan runs all the time & the TP's getting very cool!!
I'll sort it out OK but it's made me laugh - pity I can't 'send' you my T30!

Bluetooth. Are you100% certain that it doesn't work now with Fn F5?

If you're sure it's not working can I suggest you start a new topic.

Don't think pressing Fn-F5 will make any difference to the output but worth a try anyway.
