Fedora 10 Preview, great for Intel GMA owners.
The new Fedora 10 release coming up soon has the new Intel GEM (see here) which provides amazing 3d support. I'm amazing at how much smoother everything runs. The preview is out now, think of it as the precursor to RC, but stabler than Beta.
If you want to see the roadmap for Fedora 10, take a look here. I think this release is going to be amazing compared to Fedora 9, which was sub-par at best.
Preview available via direct download, and bittorrent here:

So, I have a T61 with an Intel GM965 chipset. In the article, it's stated that "... this Intel gem doesn't take advantage of features found in newer Intel IGPs (GMA 3000 / i965 series) quite yet.". So iI wonder if that means that the GM965's will see the 50% boost in Fedora but won't be able to utilize all of their features, or that the 965's are still doomed to sub-par performance all around.

In Fedora 9 they were trying out DRI2, which was horrid under Intel cards. This is a step up from the last release. It feels a lot more fluid.

Thank goodness. I am running Debian Lenny right now on my R61 and the graphics performance is _atrocious_. I downloaded the pre release of Cambridge today and am planning on giving it a shot on the weekend. I will report back with my experiences, especially with graphics.

Alright just did the install, graphics performance is far improved from Lenny, I was able to *gasp* play Alien Arena, albeit on low settings. So far I am liking Fedora 10 very much, seems very quick. Thanks for the tip!

Trackpoint or Trackpad? You can generate your own xorg.conf if you want, and it'll work.dcast wrote:How would I configure trackpoint scrolling? Apparently Fedora 10 has no xorg.conf to edit due to automagic detection? I could create one I suppose but I wouldn't want to bjork it. Did you get it configured?
Just ctrl-alt f2, login as root. Enter in this
Code: Select all
init 3 #Drops X so you can build a new configuration
X -configure
mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
init 5 #Brings you back into X
(I did this in order to increase the Virtual screen size to use xrandr)

Alright, got that working, had to play with it a little bit, but the results are good. I have posted up my xorg.conf for anyone in the same situation. It is here:

Highly recommended against, if anything is Fedora's biggest shortcoming, it is this. Upgrading between releases is a pain, and they really should add it to their todo list. You can install via DVD and select the upgrade menu, but with Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Gentoo, etc you don't have to burn a disc to upgrade.Harryc wrote:If I install the latest Fedora preview, can I upgrade to the final release without reinstalling the OS?
They also recommend a clean install after the final release, but using Preview you won't need to upgrade to RC to get that, etc.

Yup, I've been able to do it from Ubuntu RC to release, OpenSUSE as well. Still not worth it to me though, Fedora is my weapon of choice.Harryc wrote:That's too bad. I agree that is a shortcoming. With Opensuse for example, you can upgrade from RC through final with no issues.

Does this release include DRI2? In otherwords, can you guys (with GMA graphics) run Compiz, GLXGears, and rotate the cube at the same time? If the gears morph with the cube, you know that DRI2 is working.
EDIT: What about VSync?

I am enjoying it, seems very good, stable so far, extremely up to date with everything. I installed from the net-install cd and it took ages, I assume the servers were overloaded but its been worth the wait for it to come out of Beta. In response to wswartzendruber, no it does not appear to be DRI2, I tested your method and the gears stayed in the top left hand corner of the screen. Too bad... Maybe when the 2.6.28 kernel is released with Intel GEM gets merged with the main, stable kernel.

I just upgraded from 9 to 10...very much improved!
I upgraded my installed Fedora 9 to 10 using preupgrade on my T42p with very few problems. The main problem I had was that I have grub installed to root on my Fedora distro, so instead of automatically booting into Fedora so that it could complete the upgrade, I had to change my grub configuration on the distro that I am using to boot. Since the kernel and initrd files had not been created yet, I was still able to boot by using a chainloader entry. After that, it installed everything and upgraded without a hitch. Others haven't been so fortunate however. I downloaded the latest version of preupgrade prior to attempting the upgrade per some advice found on the Fedora forums. Then I followed this:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpgrade
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpgrade
Fedora upgrades
If you install Fedora Alpha, Beta, or Preview, updates are pulled from the development (a.k.a. "rawhide") repository. By installing all updates until the moment when the final release appears, you get exactly the final release. Then, you can switch to the normal "updates" repository, and follow the updates for the stable release. I did that without any issues. If I install the latest Fedora preview, can I upgrade to the final release without reinstalling the OS?
tylerwilie's answer refers to upgrading between releases, which is supposed to work if no third-party software packages have been installed. However, many users do install third-party software...
