is there any SIMPLE fan control program to stop the noise?

I really would like to use Ubuntu or some other distro more often, but the ThinkPad T60 series fan whine makes me crazy. Thankfully, the TPFancontrol program saves my sanity in Windows. I have looked into fan control schemes for Linux, but they all seem hopelessly "geeky" and incomprehensible for my inexperienced brain.
What do you use for fan noise control when running a Linux operating system on your ThinkPad?
thanks!

The fan in my R61 doesn't hardly run. Temp hangs 39/40 Celsius
Do you know if the fan issue is just in Ubuntu ? Do you have all the modules for acpi installed?
If you go to a Konsole and type acpi -V
That command should post the temps you are running.
Also have you tried other distro's with a liveCD to see if the fan ran less with them ?
Also read this right here. It might be an answer.

Well tpfc (from the thinkwiki link) looks like it would do the trick.
