dual boot and keep ibm service partition/rapid restore
To all Linux experts,
I want to keep the rapid restore feature on T42 so I kept the IBM service partition.
I used partition magic to resize NTFS, and created 2 logical partion 1 for linux and 1 for data. IBM service partition was the last partition.
suse installed just fine and dual boot was no problem. but get fatal error when trying to access ibm service partition from suse boot menu.
The IBM service partition had been 'moved arount' when I was resizing and creating new partitions, dont know if that has anything to do with the error??? Also GRUB is in MBR, I guess that has something to do with it....
any ideas?
thx

well, finally figured it out.
trick is when using partition magic 8. use resize/move to shrink NTFS --> leaves IBM_SERVICE at where it is. There is another resize button, dont use that.
I resized NTFS and left the free space as is. Pop in Suse DVD and load it in the free partiton. Also, grub is loaded in mbr. After all this, suse boots, and rapid restore's return to factory setting also works fine. Haven't tested out saving HD image c:\ using RR and restored from image.... but should also be working.

No. you have option to restore C:/ only.
I restored to factory content to c:/ only. linux was intact but can only boot from CD. I think the partiton table in MBR was screwed up so linux cant see the /boot partition...
Haven't tried restore to saved image. would be interested to find out if that would work...
Another note, the /boot formated as ext2 didn't work for me. dd if=xxx of=sss....command had errors. format /boot as ext3 worked fine and was suggested by ibm.

FC3 on t42p with Restore and Recovery
hi,
I have FC3 on my machine dual bootable with Win XP.But I lost access to Restore and Recovery. Can anyone tell me how I ould include that in my GRUB boot loader or anyone other way of accessing my restore and recover. I want to reset factory settings. Will that result in the loss of Linux?
Please help.

you lost access to RR because you changed MBR. you need to restore the original MBR and install grub on boot sector of /boot partition. keep ibm_service partion INTACT --no moving that partition at all. then follow instruction on other posts on how to do when you dont want to install grub on mbr....

and once you restore to factory setting you wont be able to boot to linux. you will have to boot to linux using cd/dvd.
when I restore to factory setting, the mbr cant see the /boot....I have tried restore to save image.... I wonder if saved image would also save/restore updated mbr/partition table.....
