Re: What distro do YOU use?
I have a couple of Thinkpads that are running Linux.
Thinkpad 240 with Puppy Linux(HDD boot)
Thinkpad 570 used to have slackware 7.0, but I did clean install of Vector Linux Light 2 weeks ago.
Thinkpad s30 has Slackware 9.0
Other than Thinkpad, I was running Suse8.2 on the system with Transmeta Crusoe, but since it became obsolete, I reformatted HDD and installed Slackware 13.0 and Xubuntu 9.10 a few weeks ago.
I tend to like Slackware and its derivatives.

Agreed! If you want bleeding edge, use Fedora, if you want something that just works: CentOS, Debian, or OpenSUSE. Ubuntu has such a habit of eating itself alive with updates that I can't stand it.ThinkRob wrote:Debian.

Not so sure if I'd agree with the OpenSUSE bit. SLED, certainly -- but OpenSUSE *is* more analagous to Fedora in terms of its Q/A relationship with the parent distro. It's not as bleeding-edge as Fedora, but it's not as well-supported and "enterprise level" as SLED IIRC.tylerwylie wrote: Agreed! I'll second the CentOS recommendation though: CentOS has a fantasitc amount of testing and whatnot behind it (since it's literally just a de-branded RHEL). I'm more partial to the "Debian way" (path setup, packaging system, philosophy, etc.), but I've run CentOS on a number of boxes with great results. The only thing that bugs me is the deviation from upstream that's common with RH and its derivatives. Debian does this too to an extent, but not as much as RHEL/CentOS. The kernel's the best example of this: it's based on 2.6.18, but is patched so extensively that it's very, very, very different from what you'd get if you used 2.6.18 from kernel.org. I'm not too worried about it (since the RH-specific patching is generally done by full-time devs who know what they're doing), but it is something to consider: of the two, Debian's packages are a little closer to "stock" than CentOS's.

Re: What distro do YOU use?
The way the Fedora/RHEL linux guys do it, they do not change kernel versions often on their enterprise products but rather backport important fixes from newer kernels. That said, the Fedora/RHEL guys do happen to make most of their changes upstream as opposed to Ubuntu. Changes made by the Red Hat guys, Debian gets to take advantage of, and changes made by the Debian guys, Red Hat gets to take advantage of.ThinkRob wrote:

For OpenSUSE, it's not the most bleeding edge when it is released, however it is always a stable product for me, and the distribution does not change much over the lifespan of the release. There are very little features added to a release but lots of security updates. If you do enable the community repositories though, OpenSUSE can become more like Fedora in terms of bleeding edge.

Re: What distro do YOU use?
Over the years I have used:
RedHat (before it became this Fedora thingy we has now)
SuSE (before it became 'open') <-- 9.1 was one of my absolute favorite releases from them.
NetBSD
FreeBSD
Sabayon Linux <--- I liked this one a lot
ArchLinux <-- nice distro
Mint <-- Impressive but left me wanting, idk, more. Oh and I *hate* their custom menu. Just because you can customize a thing, it does not necessarily follow that you should customize that thing.
I am now trying out MacPup in a virtualbox and we'll see what we shall see about it.

Re: What distro do YOU use?
I am back with an X32 after two years without thinkpad.
Installed Debian Lenny from DVD. Thinkwiki has useful but outdated information because current Lenny supports more thinkpad features (like Fn-F3, suspend/resume, ThinkLight) without additional 'aptitude install...'.
The hardest part is configuration of other keys. They send events through two interfaces: acpi and nvram. The tpb package uses nvram and must be installed to support 'Access IBM' key. After writing Fn-F7 script in /etc/acpi, I added a new Fn-F6 script because I find more convenient to have separate on and off keys to control external video output. The critical point was to find the right mask for /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey, or other gnome panel applets and OSD don't react any more to some Fn keys.

Funny, I changed my XP desktop to orange-brown to match my ubuntu desktop.Marin85 wrote:Actually orange-brownThe first time I saw it I found it very cool. But I wouldn´t put my Win 7 in such a color scheme... Besides, one can always change to color themes etc or just get Kubuntu...

Set XP to run the classic theme instead of XP blue or green.Paul Unger wrote:Funny, I changed my XP desktop to orange-brown to match my ubuntu desktop. Now if I could just change the colour of the blue toolbar...
Then under the appearance manager should be an option to chose various color schemes like eggplant, desert, and so on. I'm not in front of an XP machine right now, but I know it's there.

Re: What distro do YOU use?
Fedora 13 is my primary boot on my T60. It can be a bit too bleeding-edge sometimes, but it's very stable for me, and has fantastic hardware support for the T60. Everything works perfectly out of the box (or with very minor tweaks) save IRDA and the modem, neither of which I ever use.
By the way, the poll says "Fedora Core"--it hasn't been called "Core for years now :p"
