T41 CPU upgrade problem with Ubuntu

Yesterday I decided upgrade CPU to my T41 (mother board changed to T41P 93P3313). The old CPU was 1.6 Banias (SL6F7) and the new one is 1.8 Dothan (SL7EN). I have dual boot system there: Windows XP sp3 and Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. (Both os has been updated to latest versions.) After upgrade I started the laptop and first I checked bios. There were everything ok, cpu was correct and so on. Then I continued booting to Ubuntu and then problems started. At first it went to splash correctly but after a while it shut down. Then I tried using recovery mode and the booting went fine but the CPU gauge in the toolbar showed 30MHz speed. Then I checked sysinfo and there were cpu frequency 30MHz. I was confused. After that I changed to XP and the booting went fine. Everything was there fine. CPU speed was correct one and there wasn't any problem caused by CPU upgrade. I decided to boot again to Ubuntu. This time it booted normally. Only problem was that CPU speed information. Laptop worked fine; it went to web ok and every application worked smoothly too. So I shut it down and went to sleep.

Then today morning I started it again. This time it didn't boot to Ubuntu even I tried it using recovery mode. It printed to screen a lot of something like; apci error, system temperature too high 36 (degrees celsius). It was cold and I just wondered why it says that. Ok, I decited to boot XP again and it went fine and all temperatures were fine. So the next step was made an attempt to Ubuntu again. Yes it boot fine again, but the CPU speed in the gauge and sysinfo is now only 16MHz.

Now I'm confused what to do. I tried google and search here has anybody else had same problem, but I couldn't find any. So could you please help me to find the solution.

Run an Ubuntu Live CD. Does it fail there?

Now I have ran Kubuntu 8.04 and Ubuntu 8.10 live CD's. They both worked like a charm and processor scaling worked fine. Frequency was 600MHz in idle and increased to 1,79 GHz when it was loaded.

After those tests I made a normal boot to 8.04 and now the frequency gauge shows 1,79 GHz but there was a pop up error message where it said The processor does not support scaling (free translation from Finnish). So the problem could be that scaling. Is there any setup file or something where could be old information or it could be corrupted?

EDIT: If the laptop is cold (room temperature, 21 C) then it doesn't boot at all. In the recovery mode from the screen is seen (EDIT): ACPI: Critical trip point. Critical temperature reached (45 C), shutting down. This is scrolling over and over again and then it shut down. Now when it is a little bit warmer (after I have warm it using WinXP) it shows in the splash: CPU frequency scaling not supported OK. I have cheked the bios and it is supported there. And when I boot the live CD it works.

i think you have to reconfigure cpu power management.

If suspend and hibernate work, then you only need cpu management. Most things are done automatic.
If too much work is needed then you can re-install ( some people frown on this! )

Thank you for those links. They were most interesting and led to far, but anyway "the machine" was totally mess. Especially that acpi temperature thing. I tried to reconfigure cpu power management, but the result was always that it never found cpu driver. Then the last hint what I found was compiling kernel and then I gave up and now the os is reinstalled, I found it simplest way. Hopefully I managed to save all my configurations and applications to my usb drive. Let's see.
In any case will be a day when I decided to compile my own kernel, or not.

Lesson to learn: re-installation is not always the most hard.
