Wireless networking slow to load - UBUNTU 9.04
Wireless networking slow to load - UBUNTU 9.04
After upgrading to 9.04, I'm finding that my wireless networking is REALLY slow to become active - maybe 30 seconds after the system is "up". It almost seems as if that's the absolute last thing that gets loaded, and it's always the FIRST thing I want to use. Anyone have any ideas as to how I might force wireless to become active right away (which is pretty much how 7.10 worked for me)?

Which laptop and what wireless card do you have?
I found that upgrading Linux does not necessarily
mean that everything will work as it did before.

T60 with Intel Pro... Interestingly, it has now started to initiate the wirelesss connection immediately about every other time I boot. Weird.

Ubuntu uses NetworkManager, right?
If so, click on it's icon in the tray, say edit connections, select your wireless connection and set "allow for everyone" (or something like that, don't have a NM handy atm). That will allow NetworkManager to start connecting *before* you've logged in and you should get online faster

I'll try that out; thanks. If nothing else, it'll at least help with my home connection!Zhenech wrote:Ubuntu uses NetworkManager, right?

Yeah, you'll have to do so with all WiFi connections (you use often) to get best resultsrmcder wrote:I'll try that out; thanks. If nothing else, it'll at least help with my home connection!
That's the main "problem" with NM, it is designed to run with user-rights, reading settings from the user's keyring, but that also means that it can't do anything until the user is logged in.
I know ppl not using NM for exactly this reason.
The above works for me on my home WiFi and on my university WiFi quite well, so it will for you I hope.

Just a follow-up... Making the change did NOT change the behavior. I still get a random mix of timings for the wireless to begin to become active. Sometimes right away, sometimes after 30 seconds or so of waiting. Annoying...
