What Distro?

I've been trialing Xubuntu which if you can accept none of the power management/screen saver features work is rather good. Also once in a blue moon the kernel will panic, this only need happen at a awkward moment to dent the enthusiasm for what is otherwise a solid distro.
Can anyone suggest the better distros from the other big Linux stables? Namely Redhat, Fedora and Suse. Ideally something for older hardware that works out the box.
