Ubuntu on Virtual Box: Linux Noob

I have Ubuntu 9.04 running on Virtual Box and xp pro 32-bit as the host OS. I also have 4 gb of ram installed on my machine with 3 gb recognized by windows. When I allocate system memory to Ubuntu, does Virtual Box take it from windows or from the extra 1 gb of ram not recognized by windows?

VBox will take from Windows and the the 1GB will not be recognized. Running a virtual machine in Windows is simply just another process and Windows only has so much memory to allocate to processes (3 GB limit in the case of 32-bit).
