If you expect others to help you, at least let them know what system you are using.

Seems unlikely that the volume buttons wouldn't work on such a relatively new Thinkpad. But downloading the Thinkpad special button program through the repository should do the trick. (tpb-0.6.4-2.3ubuntu1).

Aren't new operating systems just "The Bee's Knees"?
Maybe this will help a little.

I don't run Ubuntu or have a T60, but I will not be the least surprised if I do not encounter similar problems when I upgrade Mandriva and Fedora next month with their new releases. It seems everytime a new release comes out, I have to spend hours getting all my hotkeys to work. *They* just keep changing things! And to make matters worse, the programmers don't document how to configure the new systems (i.e. HAL, sysfs, etc.) for end users. If it doesn't work out of the box, things can get somewhat difficult.

I installed 9.10 on my X60s. I also installed TPB. The OSD was working until I rebooted. Same issue as described in this thread;
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... hlight=tpb
The keys themselves work, .e.g. volume up/down/mute and brightness up/down...just no OSD. Any ideas?

Yes it seems we spend hours tweaking and setting things up. Only to turn around and have a new release out. Finding ourselves starting all over.
I'm still running Mint 7 on my R61. It doesn't get much better.

LOL...in the spirit of Linux you should be installing TPB and reporting your findings here. You're taking a passive attitude eh?

So I installed the package and my OSD was working fine until I rebooted. Now nothing.
Given that and my issue with suspend also not working means I just might be giving the latest Mint release a go.

I posted in a thread about the TPB OSD problem on the Ubuntu forums and received an answer with a work-around. I haven't had time to try it yet, but should get to it in a day or 2. Meanwhile, if anyone wants to give it a go, here's the link to the thread -

Thanks Harry!
I forgot all about my old thread
I downloaded the liveCD yesterday and immediately tried the liveCD. I love Karmic so far b/c that neverending looping-sound on my R51e did not come on at all! Don't know what will happen after I update it and the next couple of months but I'll give it a go anyhow. R52 will hang on to Jaunty for the time being. It works very well on it and has not given me any problems at all

emeraldgirl08, I though that was you out on the Ubuntu forums..nice. I agree Karmic seems very solid. It's basically perfect for this X60s, and I'm sure it will work out for the R51e. Good luck.

Harry, I posted my response in that thread.
Basically when I noticed that the OSD stopped functioning after reboot the first thing I tried was adding it as a startup program. This solution has survived 5 reboots so far so I am hopeful that it is a more or less permanent solution to the issue.

Just an update.
For some reason adding only tpb to the startup stopped working for me.
Now I have edited the entry so that it reads:
gksudo tpb
unfortunately everytime I logout then back in I have to put in my password.
I could work around this by adding myself to the sudoers file. However assuming I didn't give myself ROOT ALL=(ALL) ALL and instead added myself to the section for commands only would the entry read:
Temetka tpb
Or what would be the format for that? I could just do Temetka ALL=(ALL) ALL but then I might as well enable the root account if I am going to go that way.

Can't you just add the tpb startup command to the end of /etc/rc.local to have it automatically start at each login?

I would love to know how to have it startup each time I log in!
What do I enter in terminal?

I'm not sure about login, but all Debian-based distros will execute the file /etc/rc.local as one of the last steps while booting up. So you could add your command to this file by editing it. For example, open the file in gedit:
Add your command to the end of the file. Each line executes with root permissions, so you won't be prompted for a password when the line executes.
As an example, here are the contents of my rc.local file:
#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
# By default this script does nothing.
# Map the tablet buttons:
setkeycodes 6e 109 6d 104 69 28 6b 1 6c 120
# Start power management daemon
# powernowd
exit 0
mark@X61T:/$
I've been on a Windows 7 kick for most of this year, so I hadn't booted into Linux in months. I see that there are a number of updates needed. Better get to work updating...

Thanks K0LO

Thinkpad T60 volume buttons in 9.04 and 9.10
Hi all.
I've a thinkpad T60 and 9.10 installed. I did some search on the forums and found the workaround with tpb package to fix thinkpad volume buttons issue.
My problems with that fix are:
-tbp package depens on xosd (or whatever like that, NOT Notify-OSD) so the result is not the best...
-tpb package is not neccessary at all, because thinkpad_acpi module can take care about volume buttons as well, you just have to enable the hotkey mask!
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Thinkpad-acpi
So my workaround on T60 (in terminal):
9.04 jaunty:
Code: Select all
sudo echo enable,0x00ffffff > /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey
9.10 karmic: (using sysfs):
Code: Select all
sudo cp /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_all_mask /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_mask
Please confirm if the solution works on other thikpad models.
As soon as I find solution for all the things I need on my T60 I will put it up on Thinkwiki and paste the link here.
(Active protection - hdaps)
(Trackpoint additional functions - you just have to install the: gpointing-device-settings package)
(fingerprint reader - thinkfinger)
Hope it helped for someone.

K0LO's fix did not work for my machine. I just went back and took the extra script out of the rc local file afterwards.
I haven't tried messing with this again. I wish Canoniacal would see that there are many many Thinkpad users out here and start mapping scripts to get our buttons to work! I know I've said this before but the OSD I saw in Intrepid had white fonts and looked very nice for my Thinkpad. I wonder what changed in code since then. Don't know too much about the scripts, python, etc but if I did I'd be getting down n' dirty figuring out this stuff

It seems no matter what the fix, none of them last through a reboot, at least on my X41.
The special keys work but the OSD for them doesn't, not a huge deal. At least it's not
the other way round!

TPB, the onscreen display is not working properly in Mandriva 2010, as it only works as root. There is a bug report on it. TPB works fine in Fedora 12 though.
