701C and Linux question (Debian / Ubuntu)

hi, all.
I'd like to get Ubuntu Linux (based on Debian) on my old and trusty TP 701C. the TP has 40 MByte RAM (maxed out) and a DX4-75.
the plan so far:
a) boot from a 3,5" Debian NetBoot-disk than detects PCMCIA on the 701 and my orinoco-based Artem-WLAN card in PCMCIA-slot 1.
b) do a Debian Woody install via internet
c) change apt-get repositry to Ubuntus and dist-upgrade
d) change Ubuntu default desktop from Gnome to XFree 4.2
e) sit back and enjoy.
question:
have you any experience with a configuration like suggested above? will XFCE still be too slow (so I go with fluxbox then)? and most importantly: what install disk can you recommend (know to work on TP 701C and with my WLAN card)?
thanks and regards,
Carsten
