T42 ATI 9600 Graphics and Redhat
Hi,
Has anyone used the ATI drivers on the ATI website for Redhat Enterprise 3 or 4 or Redhat 9 or Fedora Core 3?
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linu ... ubmit.y=11
Also, ATI offers different drivers for XFree86 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 as well as Xorg 6.8
Does anyone know which XFree86 version Redhat 9 runs?
Thanks in advance,
David

I am not sure about redhat, but fedora core uses xorg. You can just yum the driver, they have howto on fedorafaq.
yum command to install ati:
yum install ati-fglrx kernel-module-fglrx-`(uname -r)`
Fedora faq, many questions answer here:
http://www.fedorafaq.org/
If you are doing redhat, go with FC3, everything works after installs, except sleep events. I am still working on the details with that, but [censored]...hw and system time get out of synch.
ibm-acpi is compiled in and works good. So with FC3 there is not much to do from hardware standpoint. Bluetooth and everything works....linux as came as long way from when I first started, very impressive.
However, if it is redhat.
Do this command:
$rpm -qa | grep -i xfree
The output should display which version. Just download the correct version and follow the readme.[/url]

This is actually a timely question for me. I'm trying to get the ATI driver going with a box-stock RedHat 9.0 install on a T42 (ATI 9600). During the package installation, I get a load of unresolved symbols, which the ATI FAQ says is due to a mismatch between the kernel source and the actual build. I went through the instructions for rebuilding the kernel using the old configuration, then manually loaded the module, but I still get the same error.
Has anyone got this combination to work successfully? I'm certainly not kernel-level proficient in RedHat, so I could be missing someting entirely obvious. (I did also make another symbolic link for /usr/src/linux, as that seems to be what the ATI stuff was looking for, but only /usr/src/linux-2.4 and /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8 existed.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...

It's a bit long, but here you go...toolshed wrote:Please post the errors you are getting? IF they happen when you load the module, please post terminal output.

Please post link of where you got that driver.
If the drivers are compiled for 2.4.10 and you try and install on 2.40.20 system you will see errors as you described.
Also, if you have to force an RPM to install, you should research it first. force basically says to install no matter if it is compat or not....I think it throws dependency check out of the loop, but still shows the verbose output.

2.4.20-8
The drivers are from:
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linu ... bmit=GO%21
I downloaded the 4.3 version, as that's what the check.sh script called for.
Thanks!
Do you you follow these insructions, :
1a. ln -s /usr/src/'uname -r' /usr/src/linux
1b. cd /usr/src/linux
1c. install the rpm
2. Copy your existing kernel options into the source tree as folows:
cp /boot/config-`uname -r` /usr/src/linux/.config
3. Generate the kernel Makefiles using these settings as follows:
make oldconfig
4. Generate dependencies as follows:
* For kernel 2.4: make dep
* For kernel 2.6: make
5. Restart the system
6. Rebuild and reinstall the kernel module

Yes, I did all that, and it works fine. The problem comes in the next step, rebuilding and reinstalling.toolshed wrote:Do you you follow these insructions, :

It is not a solution, but good way to trouble shoot it.
Everyone keeps saying to uninstall XFree86-Mesa-libGL-4.3.0-2.90.55.
I would do a little google searching or linux forum searching....somebody has bound to have ran into this.

Thanks, I'll check into that page further, and let you know what happens. FWIW, I did quite a bit of Google searching the other day, as I figured everyone and their cousin has to have run into this problem. But, it seems that most people have moved beyond RH9, and are using later Fedora/RHEL distributions, etc. I haven't run across any data from other folks with the same setup, trying to install this driver for whatever reason. Oh well...I'll follow up when I have more info. Thanks again!toolshed wrote:Here is a link I found:

Perhaps you should consider using the latest Fedora/RHEL distrubutions.
I use RHEL 4 and driver install worked fine for me.

Dear dfumento,
Do you mean you use RHEL4 has the radeon driver itself and no need to download from anywhere?
My video card is ati radeon mobility 9600, are we having the same one?
Thanks.

Most likely you will need to download the driver, but in most cases the installation is one-click away (using the package management of RHEL4).
A word of caution: The latest Ati-drivers seem to skip some resolutions (eg on my SXGA+ screen with the 9600 mobility, max resolution was 1280x1024). This has been reported by many users, so revert to the previous ones if you are having problems. By the way, even if you are using Redhat 9 (which comes with XFree 4.3 I believe), upgrade it to X.Org, it is much faster and supports many nifty tricks.
