X31 openSUSE and Wifi problems

I have an X31 I am dual booting with WinXP and openSUSE.
openSUSE is working fairly well except for the Wifi.
I have tried both ifup and networkmanager and I can get the wired network to work but not the wireless. The wifi light will not even light up showing it is on. I have done some diagnostics as suggested on the openSUSE forum and gotten the following output.

Code: Select all

collectNWData.sh V0.6.2.0 (Rev: 1.193, Build: 2010/01/20 21:22:30 UTC)

I am not getting any help from the openSUSE forum.
Can anyone here geve me some help?
Sorry about the long post but I know it is important to give all the info I can so that people can help me diagnose the problem.

Thanks

The first thing I'd look at is encryption. You Cisco card is configured for 'psk'. I know that the card supports WPA, but does the driver? Try running with no encryption as a test...turn it off in your router and in your Linux wireless config.

On a Ubuntu-based distro I was having similar issues with networkmanager and Wifi. I switched to WICD for network management, and made sure I was running the ath5k driver on an x31. Your output doesn't seem to include the ath5k driver, so you might try it out (not sure if all x31 cards are supported or not.) This seemed to clear it (mostly) up--occasionally I'll still have moments where it appears it is just not connecting to the bus the wireless card is connected to, getting no signal at all.

I don't beleive the chipset in the Cisco Aironet is Atheros. It is a proprietary Cisco chipset. airo should be the correct module.

Thanks for the replies.
One thing I find odd is that the Wifi light that shows the Wifi is active never comes on.
It's like the card is not getting turned on.
Am I correct in assuming that the light must be on for the card to be working?

Thanks

That is odd--and is exactly the same problem I have occasionally. It simply seems like there is no wireless device powered on / installed...and then it will clear itself up after a reboot or two (or sometimes just after a few minutes sitting.) I don't think the light has to be on for the card working, though i could be wrong. In my case the led's are controlled by thinkpad_acpi which may/may not having anything to do with the card being on and off. I will say though that when my card isn't working, there is no light, and vice versa.

Harryc is, as always, right...hadn't picked up on the cisco card in your output.

Please let us know if you figure out what is going on with the card not being turned on, as I'd like to make mine more reliable as well.
