Linux on S10-2

Has anyone installed Linux on an S10-2 with XP? If so, how did it turn out? I am tempted to try some variety of Linux -- Ubuntu? Mint? Something else? -- on mine every time it takes half my remaining life expectancy to boot up or loading a new website hangs while waiting for something else to get done. If a Linux install gave significantly better speed, I'd love to know how to set it up, either coexisting with XP or replacing it. I'm a Linux newbie, unfortunately.

Thanks.

If you just want to try it, you can use Wubi, which will not require you to mess with partitions. It runs natively, not as a virtual machine, but it is stored in your existing Windows partition and can restore your old bootloader. If you don't like it, you can just delete it and it will be done.

You can use unetbootin to put a live install of Xubuntu or another distro onto a USB key and boot off of that. It won't take up any space on your HD since it runs entirely off of the USB stick. It won't be quite as fast as running from the internal drive would be, but it's got the advantage of not touching your HD.

In your case, I'd recommend you start with Xubuntu -- it's lighter than Ubuntu, but has the same solid hardware support.

If you decide you want to explore Linux more, just let me know. I'm always to help a new user get their feet wet.

Thanks, ThinkRob. Coincidentally, since last checking in I have installed Ubuntu on a USB drive. I will wipe it and try Xubuntu. It did seem a bit faster than XP Pro, even running from a slow thumb drive. My only problem was having no clue how to set up the wireless Internet connection, even after finding the right window.

Thanks for the offer of help. I will try not to be a bother, but can use all the help I can get.
