r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
I'm having a problem with my wifi connection on bootup with my r60. This happens in F12, mint8 and pclos2010 beta. After bootup, wireless connection does not come on unless I turn switch off, and then back on. This is happening with both the Intel 3945 and the Atheros 5212. I've tried loading the proper module from lib/firmware to etc/modprobre.preload.b and that worked the first time only. Then I copied 'echo -n 1 > /proc/sys/dev/wifi0/ledpin;' to etc/rc.local, and again it worked the first time only. I'm stumped. Any ideas? Works normal in xp.

Re: r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
Although http://www.vanheusden.com/misc/debian_o ... nkpad_r60/ is Debian related it does state *any* Linux.
But with a posting date of 2008, I would expect Fedora12 at least to be using a later kernel?
If you can hang on another week or so I should have my hands on a T60 (if it's comparable) and will gladly test. But I'm pretty sure one of the mods on the Suse Linux forum uses a T60 and hasn't reported any problems.
Obvious question, does wifi behave under non-Linux OS?

Re: r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
Works fine in xp, T60 &R60 are virtually the same regarding response hardware wise to issues like this. Would love to hear from others using r or t 60. Thanks.

Re: r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
This won't be much of a help, but I'm running an up to date F12 on a 3945 T60 without the problem you described. The only thing I changed from stock configuration was disabling hardware scanning (see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=83232 ), since I had rather flakey wifi reception in the beginning.

Re: r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
@ retired, apologies for the delay:
Finally got round to installing openSuse 11.2 on my T60 - no wireless problems (3945 btw). Just works like it should, no need for anything other than "automagic" install. Actually this Linux stuff is getting a bit dull, what with all this " just working"
Sorry, can't replicate the fault here.
Might get F12 on there Monday if it rains (!) but we've already had one F12 ok on a T60...
cheers!

Re: r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
Tried the hw_scan thing - didn't change the bootup /connect thing. Weird.

Re: r60 wireless switch problem with bootup/wifi connect
@ retired,
OK, so Fedora12 is also ok for wifi on my T60.
There is a BIOS switch option for network interfaces - not sure how "hidden" option works, if that allows operation from OS level which may be causing issues? May be worth looking to see it is set to "enabled" ?
Only other common point I can see (apart from your particular machine !) is that default F12 uses Gnome desktop by default and as Mint is Ubuntu based, I assume it does too; not used PCLOS so don't know but if it does, I suppose it could be Gnome-related. I use KDE and don't have time to check Gnome variants just now. Maybe you could try e.g. a Live CD of F12 KDE and see how that plays with wifi...although I can't see why the DE should have an effect.
cheers!
