Trackpoint not working on Linux Mint 6 Felicia

#1 Post by likesspace » Sat May 29, 2010 3:49 pm

Hi guys,
I recently switched from Windows XP to Linux Mint (version 6) and so far am really impressed.
Although I can't say that it was an easy switch (getting printer to work and working through a display resolution problem) I'm really happy with the results.

The one thing that I'm not happy with is that I can no longer scroll using my trackpoint.

I had gotten into the habit of using the trackpoint as a mouse wheel not only on web pages but also within any document that I open. Since switching operating systems I can no longer do this.

Does anyone know how to enable the trackpoint to emulate the mouse wheel?

Please keep in mind that I'm a total newbie when it comes to Linux, but I'm trying to learn.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Take a look at this thread, and the link to Thinkwiki.

First of all, I really appreciate your reply and you advice.
Now having said that I have visited your referenced site several times and I'm unable to make the fixes work for me.
More than likely this is because I am so new to Linux that I'm doing something wrong.

Anyway after hours of searching I finally came up with the following site that solved my problem:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 43#p178743

By modifying the HAL file my trackpoint is now working perfectly and it was about as easy as it gets (simply copy and paste the instructions into the terminal).

I'm posting this in hope of saving others the numerous hours that I've put into making this work.

Again, I do appreciate your tip but this procedure worked out well for me.

Hope you are having a great weekend.

Dave

Okay, in hopes that this will also help someone else out in the future......
Once I performed the procedure in my above post, I DID get the trackpoint to scroll like I wanted.
The only problem was that once I logged out of my session the settings would be lost.

To make this file run each time the computer is started (and also to stay running when logging out and in) I had to follow the advice on the following link:

Hope this helps someone out.

Dave
