Can't install Ubuntu on W510

#1 Post by dwinner » Mon Jun 07, 2010 10:41 am

Just got a new W510 last week. Exact model is a 4319-2PU.

On Friday I tried to install Lucid 10.04. "No network interfaces were found."

Tried this morning 8.04. Same thing.

I exited from the installer to a shell and ran "lspci"

Everything is coming up as "Unknown device", starting with

Host bridge: Intel Corporation Unknown device d132 (rev 11)
PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Unknown device d138 (rev 11)
System Peripheral: ""
...
Ethernet Controller: Intel Corporation Unknown device 3b64 (rev 11)
etc., EVERYTHING Unknown

This is not good! We were getting ready to hit the button to buy a whole bunch of these W510's, and I can't even get Ubuntu installed.

I've seen others who installed on a W510, even the 4319-2PU model I have (http://www.mikesubuntu.com/2010/05/n...ntu-new-topics)

So what's /my/ problem? Did Lenovo maybe just install a new chipset and there are no drivers ready yet?

Any ideas?

Update: It seems the problem is with 64-bit Ubuntu. I just threw in my 32-bit install live CD, and it was able to detect all the hardware, including the network card just fine.

Any ideas on why 64-bit Ubuntu is throwing a fit a W510?

It shipped with Windows 7 64-bit, and that is working fine.

The installer probably just doesn't have the PCI id<->name database, no biggie.

Trying to install anything else than the latest version is pretty much hopeless, too much new hardware in there.

What exactly is your problem with 10.04 x86_64?

When it tries to configure the network during the install, it says it can't find any adapter.

So when I bail out to a shell, and run lspci the entire output says it Unknown device, starting with the PCI and Host bridge, and everything subsequently.

dwinner,

I'm not surprised an older version of Ubuntu chokes on hardware detection & boot in a newer tech system. Try the most recent release. SEE: DISTROWATCH.COM... There is a Peer to Peer Torrent for fast download of the Ubuntu version 10.XX release.

Have you broached the subject with the global, highly active Ubuntu community? compatibility issues are a major concern. There is also the Canonical, Ltd. professional ubuntu project team. They can give you authoritative precise information pertaining to your new W510 & your company's desire to buy many of them and install them with Ubuntu.

Do you have the Intel 6250 card in that machine? Intel released drivers just recently for it. You'll need iwlwifi-6050-ucode-9.201.4.1
