Hello,
I'm asking these questions well in advance of actually doing it but I just want to have a good idea of what I'm getting into before starting.
I want to upgrade my HD and duelboot Linux and Windows
A couple Q's
I will partition the HD into several partition, one for Windows and Windows programs, one for Linux and linux Programs, one for media.
How much HD space does Linux need? I am talking about just the OS and applications data. I know 10Gb is enough for Windows.
Will both Linux and Windows be about to use the media partition? like listening the mp3 on the media partition in both Windows and Linux (at different time of course)
Also, I remember reading somewhere that I should get Windows working first before installing Linux, is that right?
And for the duel boot controller, I should use the Linux one, right?
Thanks!

Re: yet another Linux newbie question
That clearly depends on what you want to install. Unless you install big games, though, you have to try hard to get it over 5Gbmanixc wrote:Hello,

Make it a FAT32 partition and you'll be fine. Will both Linux and Windows be about to use the media partition? like listening the mp3 on the media partition in both Windows and Linux (at different time of course)
Not necessary, but useful. In theory, you can install Linux first and then, after reinstalling windows, just overwrite the boot sector with GRUB and you should be fine. But windows first is easier. Also, I remember reading somewhere that I should get Windows working first before installing Linux, is that right?
Yes, you can use Lilo or Grub, I prefer the latter. And for the duel boot controller, I should use the Linux one, right?
You are welcomeThanks!

linux reads ntfs as well, but has no write support. better to go with fatmanixc wrote: Will both Linux and Windows be about to use the media partition? like listening the mp3 on the media partition in both Windows and Linux (at different time of course)
IIRC, you can also use the windows bootloader to start linux, but i've never done it, lilo is easy.manixc wrote: And for the duel boot controller, I should use the Linux one, right?
