Ubuntu Permanent install on USB?

#1 Post by blink » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:34 pm

Hi All, I am having a play with linux for the first time & am quite liking Ubuntu & was wondering if i can install it on to a usb drive for an X40.
I have it bootable from usb which is fine but cannot seem to make it a permanent install & i i need to do this to download the mp3, flash addons etc.
Any helps or tips much appreciated.

I tried mint which has these already but it doesnt seem to agree with my x40 & i get choppy audio & video & frequent crashes.
Ubuntu seems to work a lot better & i would really like to try & make it a permanent usb install if possible?

Many Thanks

I lost count of how many persistant installations I did (since Ubuntu 8.04 I think). Currently I have a persistant Ubuntu 10.10 in an 8GB stick and Linux Mint 10 in an 4GB stick.

All of them done with the "Universal USB Installer" described here: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/, there are a bunch of other tools as well (like to boot multiple ISOs and so on...). Check the site up!

All linux installs for all the Thinkpads I have are done from these sticks, even for the T' Models, they are usually way faster than a burnt CD/DVD (and more silent too  )

Many Thanks Harry, That was just the ticket & has done the trick :D
Tasurinchi - Nice insight, I had actually tried the pendrivelinux way but for some reason it just wasnt happening. I Could get a live flash drive working but not a permanent install to it. Mint 10 was giving me problems on the x40 but i managed to get Mint 8 running from the place Harry mentioned & video & Audio both seem to work well now.
I no doubt may have more linux questions in the future & its great that people like yourself & Harry are here to assist. Thanks

Did you choose the persistant size when using the universal installer? I only had problem once with a cheap stick that wouldn't boot at all.

Yes i did the persistant thing, not sure what the problem was on pendrivelinux but thankfully sorted now using Harry Cs method.
I only have it permanent on a cheap 4gb stick, i also have a live 2gb stick which to me seems to run a little quicker.
