Wireless config T23/Ubuntu 10.10
Hey guys,
This is my first post on this board and I'm really hoping you guys will be able to help me out.
I picked up a used T23 a couple months ago for a killer price. It has the 1.13GHZ, 14.1" screen, DVD drive, 40GB harddrive and 512mb RAM. It had XP loaded on it when I got it but I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it.
Yesterday I just received a new battery and wireless card for it. I installed the card and it is recognized by the computer but I'm having trouble connecting to the wireless network. I've looked on the Ubuntu board but haven't found much as well as searching the net. What happens is when I go to the network manager on the toolbar and click on it it doesn't seem to recognize the network we have setup at home. So I click on connect to hidden network and enter in all the information for our network and then it tried to connect and after a few minutes of trying it then asks for the password again and continues in that cycle until I just click cancel.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks Andrew

Run lspci, iwconfig, and route from a console and post the results here.

What is the SSID that you have configured in your router? What encryption are you using in your router? Is the router configured to support 802.11 'b' ? What exact markings are on the card itself (manufacturer/model)? Is it an IBM part?

The router that we have is the Linksys WRT160N it says it supports 802.11B. The card I have is an Actiontec 802MIP.
Sorry for the noob question but what is the SSID?

Re: Wireless config T23/Ubuntu 10.10
That card is 10 years old, and it does not support WPA/WPA2 encryption...WEP only. What type of encryption are you running on your router? Also in the router configuration, you'd have to be running wireless B only, or wireless b/g only on the 2.4Ghz channel. I don't believe that's a dual band router either. That implies that you cannot run other wireless N devices and run this card in wireless B at the same time.

Re: Wireless config T23/Ubuntu 10.10
The SSID (Service Set IDentifier) is the "name" that has been assigned to your wireless access point (WAP), in your case the Linksys WRT160N router. If you have not assigned one yourself using the WAP's setup routine then you are using a default name (Linksys) that was set by the manufacturer. Usually, the SSID is broadcast so that you can identify/select which wireless system to connect to. In your initial post you say that you connect to a "hidden network". If so, that means that the SSID is not being broadcast by the WAP. Regardless if the SSID is broadcast or not, in order for you to connect to it, the SSID you enter into the setup routine on the T23 must match the router's SSID. Assuming that they do match, then another problem would be that the password (i.e., the encryption key; WEP, WPA, WPA2) must also match. Here there's a possibility to get things wrong by selecting the wrong encryption system or mistyping the key.
All that said, after I Googled your Actiontec 802MIP card, this is one thing I found:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=147633 (Problem with Intersil/Prism 2.5 mini-PCI wireless)
The gist of what the poster says is that the card doesn't work under Linux.
edit: Found this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=527641 which says the card can work with some edits.

When I meant by connecting to the "hidden" is that my computer didn't say there was a wireless network available. But if I go to wireless settings on my Droid it pops up saying the network is available.
Btw the SSID is Linksys C
