WiFi for Ubuntu 10.10

I loaded Ubuntu 10.10 on my Thinkpad T60 8744-5BU. I pulled down all the updates too. I can access the web with a hard wired connection but Atheros WiFi-N will not connect.

This is my first experience with Linux and have no idea how to make the WiFi work. Any help would be appreciated.

Atheros does not play well with uBuntu, best I recall. I have several laptops running 10.04 and 10.10. All are running the Intel 2200 cards.

That's weird, my T60 has an Atheros AR5BXB6 and my T61 the Atheros AR5BXB72, both worked with Ubuntu 10.10 out of the box, although my T60 is OS-less now, I don't recall having any connection or driver problems...

Atheros cards are one of the best-supported wifi cards on Linux, so I'm really suprised yours doesn't work out-of-the-box. Try "sudo ip addr show" and "lsmod | grep ath" in console and post the output here.

I've used a number of Lenovo and non-Lenovo Atheros-based WLAN cards under a wide range of distributions. I've never had an issue with any of them.

comps' suggestion would indeed give us a good starting point.

I appreciate the input from the replies. I believe my initial Ubuntu Live CD was defective as there was no Wireless Icon in the top right corner of desktop or perhaps I did something wrong.

I burned a second Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and this time I had Wireless Icon which I opened, entered the SSID & password. the T60 then connected wirelessly.
