Just upgraded from F14 on my T60 using the preupgrade method without a hitch.
Booting seems a little faster, performance in Firefox 4 a little sluggish.. just typing this
message, it uses around 40% CPU. I might give chromium a try soon.
I had to re-enable trackpoint scrolling using the xorg.conf.d method on thinkwiki,
everything else worked fine. I stumble over occasional slight graphics glitches but I'm
pretty sure this will improve during the first few rushes of updates.
The big change is, of course, gnome 3, and since I tested that since the alphas, most
of the new concepts are not that big of a 'shock' to me. I did, however, install the
gnome-tweak-tool package to enable desktop icons and disable sleep mode when the
lid is closed.
What I don't quite understand are the 'available'+'occupied' buttons in my user menu
(upper right corner). I still have to start empathy manually and when it's not running, they
don't seem to have any purpose at all. Also, I'm in desperate need of a replacement
for the old weather applet.. any Ideas?

If you're a Firefox user, the best weather solution I've found is Forecastfox.

Thanks for this, forecastfox is pretty nice. I hope I'll also find a solution
outside firefox soon (a solution like the old applet would be ideal, or maybe
a desktop applet as in kde4).

Del key behaviour within nautillus has changed. Now you have to press ctrl+del
to delete files. I used the hint on

to revert to the old behaviour.

I also found 2 gnome-related bugs but haven't checked the trackers yet.
Nautilus doesn't run from the quick launcher and also not without a path
given as an argument. I have to go to a terminal and enter "nautilus ~"
to start a session. Also, there's an annoying graphics glitch when using
alt+esc to flip between open windows. Stay tuned

looks like a nice weather extension is in the make.. hooray

Also, I recommend trying out some of the gnome-shell-extensions-* packages.
The gnome-shell-extensions-places-menu extension is by far my favourite as
it really adds missing functionality.
(side note: in my opinion, the 'dock' would have been a good place to display
shortcuts to places and removable media, but, so far, it's for applications only)

You don't have to manually start empathy to receive and reply to incoming IM's. Right now there is no GUI to initiate new IM conversations in the gnome shell, but this is going to change in the next version. For now, you have to use empathy to initiate new IM conversations.

have you tried cairo-dock + weather(cairo-dock-plug-ins)?

Thanks for this insight. I just checked the 3.2 roadmap and it's good to see that things are still evolving and shaping up. I'm really looking forward to zeitgeist integration.

I haven't checked cairo-dock but, to be honest, don't want to install an additional piece of software to achieve something I could somehow manage to do using the gnome interface. Actually one of the reasons to switch to gnome3 was the integrated desktop search, allowing me to finally remove gnome-do. Maybe I'll try cairo sometime, but for now I'm happy using the firefox weather plugin.


Other updates: The nautilus bug seems to have been fixed during the last rush of updates so I can finally start it as intended. My machine seems to run very hot, I think because of all the 3d stuff constantly going on.. major problem. I tried switching the radeon driver to low speed mode but the system is hardly usable then. I also discovered a nasty bug in soundjuicer (so, not gnome related) preventing me from ripping cds. we'll see how this turns out..
