Fan rotating slowly even under heavy load

#1 Post by ShukatsuRonin » Thu Jun 23, 2011 11:35 am

Hello everyone

I just got myself a Thinkpad Edge 11 on which I installed Mint11.

Things are more or less ok (quite a few bugs) and it's very resource hungry (around 650 MB at boot).

However, there is something that bothers me a lot, the fan speed seems constant whatever I do. It stays around 500 rpm (based on libsensors and ibm-acpi).
I checked the manufacturers sites and my cpu should handle it but maybe not my hdd. According to udisks it's still ok because the temperature is very low but ibm-acpi displays a value which can be 10° higher at times.
If I follow the latter my hdd is close to the upper limit (60°) most of the time and even beyond when I play a video.

Since I doubt 500 rpm is the maximum speed I checked how to correct the situation and came across thinkfan. Let's face it, I'd love to be a guru but that was definitely too difficult for me to handle and I'm afraid of destroying my machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Specs :
Intel Pentium U5600 dual core
Intel GMA HD
Memory 4 GB
Mint11 64bits
