T40/R50 pulsating fan: new embedded controller bios?

#1 Post by lophiomys » Mon Jul 05, 2004 10:15 am

On the German Newsgroups: de.comp.sys.notebooks
"Marko Härtel" reported on 5 July
that he got an inofficial Embedded controller bios V3.02 for his T40p,
which would solve the the 5s pulsating fan problem
in conjunction with a T40/T41 Long Fan.

Anyone here who also had his hands on the Embedded Controller Bios V3.02?

There is a new NERO-Image for burning a bootable CD with the Update. It defenitely fixes the 5-second FAN howling but does not stop the FAN from stupidly running all the time and blowing out cool air.

It also blocks my IBM battery clone which is really bad news. I am back to 3.01a again.

Good to hear that a fix is in the works.

Btw - what is the IBM Battery Clone?
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

vpn-user,
on which Thinkpad model have you tested the inofficial v3.02?

Thinkpad T41p manufactured in May 2004, I think its the latest T41p model.

With "IBM battery clone" I mean a non-original battery which is compatible but a lot cheaper.

The inofficial BETA version is v3.03! It will become official when the battery problem has been fixed, an IBM representative (who gave us this fix) told me.

First impression of the inofficial bios update

#7 Post by s0larian » Thu Jul 08, 2004 4:36 pm

I installed the inofficial embedded controller bios 3.02 on my Thinkpad T40p 2373-g1g (7/2003). It doesn't solve the fan problem completely, but improves it a lot!

In medium fan-speed the 5-sec pulse is gone, but sometimes you still can hear the accelerating of the fan (every 30 seconds or so). Improvement at least 90 %.
If the fan runs full speed you still can hear the 5-sec pulse, but it seems much more quiet.

To solve the pulsating acceleration problem completely perhaps the fan has to be exchanged to the M10 long-fan which the T40p I think doesn't have. Or the official Release 3.03 of the embedded controller will bring more improvement. At least after one year waiting IBM is doing something!

Indeed, oh where oh where can one get the UNofficial BIOS. I rather do the BIOS thingy, than the exchange of the fan thingy.

Anyone? How big is it? You could email it to me...

Here is the download link for the inofficial 3.02 embedded controller I found in a German Forum (it is not from me):
http://www.groovyland.de/ibm/

Download the IBM.nrg, burn it with Nero and boot the CD. The zip File is just for building a diskette image.

One thing: in the Newsgroups people say, that this 3.02 Bios has problems with non-official 3rd-party batteries. So just install it, when you have the original Akku.

Have fun and post your experience!

Sweet...I'm going through the motions of getting it installed - I'll post comments as soon as start using the machine...

For those who don't have Nero, you can download a trial version here: http://www.nero.com/en/download_us.php?pak=1.

I just burnt the image, but, I forgot I need AC power and full battery to do the update :(

I will have to wait till I get home tonight...

The fan cycling is always present but the cyle is now of 30 secondes
the fan start at 39°C and shut down at 32°C.

vpn-user could you ask the man who build the BIOS/Emb in order to change the stop and start fan T° ? (for example: the fan start at 50° and stop at 40°)

Thanks.

@spirifer: what fan do you have? Look in the list below. I want to see if there is a difference between the old long fan and the newer M10 long fan.

Since the M10 with the Part-Number 13R2657 costs just 20 Euro on www.ibm.de, it could be worth the replacement.

Update on the new BIOS...

#16 Post by atlacatl » Fri Jul 09, 2004 11:30 pm

Ok, I've installed the BIOS and there seems to be an improvement. I don't hear the 5 sec. pulsating noise. Like another user said, it is still there, but not every 5 seconds - Too lazy to time it, but it is defenetely an improvement.

If you've installed the new BIOS, is your fan running at low speed now? ALL the time? I think mine is :? It's defenetely quiter, though...

Good luck...

I have the M10 long fan (20€ in Europe), but I don't the see difference before, thus I put the original fan in my laptop (short fan, radeon 7500).
The sound between the short and the long fan is different, but when the fan never stop, long fan is very noisy (like the short fan...).

They (IBM) must change the start/stop T° of running fan ?
Or tweak the BIOS ?

Update:

I installed the new embedded controller 1RHT69WW (3.02) from the IBM web site and the fan pulsating is getting back again. So i will stick with the beta driver (also labeled 3.02), they are much better, even if they don't solve the problem completely.

No french for me, so here is the google translation:

The person in charge for lasted long ventilation is certainly the GPU for verifier I placed a radiator of kyro on thermal GPU(sans paste) surmounted of a ventilator coolermaster 50*50 supplied with an external food into 3 Volt. Only the GPU east cools bus in 3 V the ventilator does not ventilate large thing. On sector, processor always to 600 MHz, BIOS:3.06f, controller safety 3.02 beta. To make heat the GPU I use 3dmark 2001, reading of T° with Hmonitor and mobilmeter images of the device: by far further radiator ventilateur+radiator the transformer T° part results in videos: - Without ventilateur/rad on the GPU, ventilation starts as of the premiere scene of 3dmark and arrete not after having quity 3dmark.... beginning without end - With the ventilateur/rad lit on the GPU, a complete test 3dmark without ventilation of the CPU here - With the ventilateur/rad lit on the GPU, during 3dmark the ventilator launches out (after 3dmark of continuation with ventilateur/rad lit), I leave 3dmark and as by magic in a few seconds the ventilation of the CPU arrete. miracle - Without ventilateur/rad lit on the GPU, I launch 3dmark, ventilation declenche as usual as of the first scene, I leave 3dmark and I place my ventilateur/rad lit on the GPU, and there too the ventilation of the CPU arrète in less than one minute (I had a little badly to place with a hand the ventilateur/rad) magic Remarque: after several test (with ventilateur/rad lit on the GPU) mobilmeter indicated T° of 46° during more than one minute but the ventilation of the CPU missed. Remarks on the radiateur/ventilator "long fan" 13R2657: - the species of thermal "paste" (the pink thing) is really null, why not have deposited true thermal paste as for the CPU. Below the pink layer, there is a layer black and then the "copper" of the radiator. (GPU -- >couche pink -- >couche black -- >radiator) - the contact between the radeon 7500 is bad, the contact is not uniform on any surface of the GPU, which is normal because this radiator is made for M10. - a solution would be to put a fine copper plate to have a uniform contact and to put true thermal paste, remains to know if heat will suffisament be dissipated so that ventilation arrete..

@spirifer: nice work!

Since I don't speak french: preventing the fan starting could be clocking down with the ATI tool?

as I thought.

One interesting note:
a friend of mine with a T40p-g1g (exactly the same machine as mine) uses Fedora Linux. His fan doesn't have the pulsating at all and under Linux the fan is almost never starting.

s0larian,
did your friend with the t40p-g1g/Fedora Linux also try to run his t40p with e.g. Windows XP?,
And could he verify that with e.g. XP the fan pulsating was present or not?

Yes, but for some reason he has no pulsating at all! Not with XP and not with Linux. The fan is more quiet as mine, even in full speed. It' s exactly the same machine as I have, both made in China, my friend's Thinkpad was just built 4 weeks later.

Do you use the cpufreq deamon in Linux? If this is deactivated or not installed, the fan runs all the time.
