Change operating system?
The store I want to buy a thinkpad from, they only have the windows 2000 model. Would it be possible to buy that, and then
ask IBM (within 30 days) for the windows XP restore Cd and
restore that to change the operating system?
thanks

Win2k is a terrific OS -why exactly do you need XP?enquirer wrote:The store I want to buy a thinkpad from, they only have the windows 2000 model. Would it be possible to buy that, and then

I know its terrific!
But, WinXp has some convenient gizmos, also as I am not much adept in networking, I gather its automatic network configurator is better than win2k. (for all sorts of set ups, peer to peer, file sharing with the cable,
wireless, internet sharing etc...) for example I have always tried to do software internet sharing of a cable connection with win2k (without a router) over a peer to peer network and it never worked. It has to do something with a bug (aka "feature" of course) win2k has on the L2TP protocol, I dont remember exactly.

Re: I know its terrific!
I highly recommend sticking with win2k over xp. It is far more stable (although they both use the same engine) and much more mature as an OS than XP. Just look at the new XP service pack size and you'll see what I mean.
I am having some issues with SP2 for XP but it still is not in production. XP Pro SP1 all patched is every bit as robust and reliable as Windows 2000. I used Windows 2000 when it came out, and I agree it is excellent. Networking in Windows 2000 works well too. But XP Pro is newer, and with new application revisions and Office XP (vs. Office 2000), it works exceedingly well. ... JDHurst
