weird issue with processor speed on T42

well, it seems that my T42 doesnt want to listen to the settings im giving it, i set the maximser wizard to super power saver so that when im plugged in it will always run the processor at full speed, however after plugging it in, it runs full speed for about 10 seconds, then speedstep kicks in and it starts throttling down the CPU, i set it to high performance and unplugged and it ran at max, i plugged it back in and sure enough it slowed down again. wtf is going on with this thing?

Your post doesn't make much sense haha, but maybe you forgot to also change the AC settings?

sorry, im pretty agrivated right now, all the AC settings in battery maximiser are set for the processor to run at maximum, went into the bios, set speedstep to run max performance as well on AC, can anyone else run thg_clock.exe for a few minutes and let me know if they have this happen as well? it will run at the full 1.7GHz for about 15 seconds on AC then the software will say that the CPU speed has slowed down like speedstep is kicking in and slowing it down.

I am pretty sure mine stays at 1.7 GHz after 1 minute. I like to keep mine at Adaptive though.

SP2 replaced the factory processor driver. I had to reinstall gv3.sys. But that's probably not your problem. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

edit: Never mind, I get what you mean now. No idea, check AC settings are OK. I havent noticed this with my T42.

I noticed that the CPU speed wasn't being accurately indicated in My Computer|Properties. I uninstalled Battery Maximizer and the Power Management driver, and reinstalled the latest of each (1.36a and 1.26, respectively), and that seemed to clear things up.

I have the same laptop and the same issue. Windows is not reporting the proper speed, even after I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers mentioned above.

There MUST be a utility that always reports the proper speed, regardless of installed software....

I downloaded SpeedswitchXP as recommended in a different post and it seems to be reporting the laptop is at 1.7 GHZ sometimes but other times is reports the laptop is at much lesser speeds even with the setting set to full power.

I wish there was a better way of controlling the CPU.

so, I guess the mystery is....... is it the CPU control that is flakey, or the tools that read it.... how to solve the mystery???

well back to this issue, the only thing i can think of is that its thermal control, just slowing it down when its not being used at all to keep the heat down. Other than that i just dont know

Why is speedstep such a bad thing? Doesn't it speed back up if you start using it harder? Is there a reason your processor needs to run at 1.7 when you're reading e-mail?

There is a huge reason the processor needs to run at high speeds. I am having similar problems when I use Netbeans to program JAVA. It runs at a CRAWL, nothing responds. The moment I plug it in - things are perfect. I didn't expect my new T42 to run things slower than my old butt 300mhz Celeron laptop from 3 years ago.

Has there been any resolution to CPU speed problems?

Does anyone think this is a problem with the Centrino CPU itself?

to check the cpu speed, you could use cpu-z... or motherboard monitor...

Go to Tom's Hardware guide web site and download the Clock v 1.2. With it running you can see the changes in real time. I use SpeedSwitch set to Dynamic, but if you set it to performace you can see it change to the maximum clock speed of your processor. Mine shows from 598.059 to 1998.064 YMMV

Speedswitching, the My Computer Properties, and Adaptive vs Max Performance seem to work correctly for me.
Like Conmee, I had incorrect speed readings on My Computer > Properties before I installed the latest Battery Maximizer and Power Management drivers (or, at least I thought I had incorrect readings - I could've been mistaken).

I was curious, so I grabbed that thg_clock.exe from tomshardware.
I used a power scheme with Max Performance on AC and Adaptive on battery. I let the thg_clock.exe run for a while, and it stayed at 1694 MHz - and the My Computer Properties also stayed at 1.69GHz. I unplugged the AC and thg_clock and MyComputer went down to 600MHz (and would go up from there depending on what I was doing).

And, in case anyone wonders what I have in the bios. Under Config > Power, I have Speedswitch Enabled, and I have both AC and Battery set to Max Performance (in both places). Though, I assume that shouldnt even matter.

Okay, I downloaded this Clock tool and in AC mode with High System Performance on, it shows ~1794Mhz (on my 1.8GHz T42p). When I right-click on My Computer and then Properties, it shows the CPU is running at 598Mhz, though.

On batteries and in Super Power Saver mode, Clock 1.2 shows ~596Mhz, but My Computer/Properties shows 197Mhz.

Any idea what this is all about?? What are the numbers on My Computer/Properties showing, and if it's not accurate there, is there a way to change or fix that to show the 1.8GHz or 600MHz that Clock 1.2 is showing, which sounds like a more realistic measurement....?

Okay, I feel silly now... I should have read more carefully that previous reply.

Last night I downloaded all updates from IBM and all appears to be good now. The "My Computer -> Properties" speed is properly displayed now.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Ha!

im not talkin about windows reporting it incorrectly, windows sees that its running at 1.7GHz, however any REAL TIME status program i use shows that its running at 400-500MHz, and jumps a lot. and for some other reason DIVX movies wont play in full screen anymore, what is goin on here? ive formatted twice already.

Skywing, have you tried http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/ ? You probably have, but I figured I'd check.
Also, you say you've reformatted a couple of times (re-installed windows?). If so, have you installed the intel chip support? http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46058

You seem to have some issues going on over there

- I would go through and double check that all my ibm drivers were up-to-date.
