Access Connections can't connect to secured wireless network

I just installed Vista on my T60 Wide with Atheros A/B/G/N wireless card. (8744-5BU).

Everything seems to be working fine except for Access Connections... With AC I can connect to open wireless networks without issue... However, if I try to connect to a secured wireless network (even tried importing my old profiles from XP) it errors out at "Waiting for association."

I am able to connect to some of the networks with built in Windows wireless networking, but it'd cludgy and I really prefer AC.

I've tried everything I can think of... all software and drivers are at the latest version.

This is really a deal-breaker with Vista for me, because I have so many private networks that I use Access Connections to manage.

Anybody else experienced this or have a clue what's going on?

I'm sitting here setting up a brand new T60p Widescreen, and was unable to connect it to my WEP wireless network. I tried both Access Connections and the Vista networking, and I also went down the route of uninstalling Norton Anti**** stuff and disabling the firewall.

Nothing helped.

I then walked into the back room, turned off the power on the access card, turned it on again, and took a bathroom break.

Sure enough, when I came back to the laptop, it was all connected and happy.

You tell me why I needed to repower the access point!

I'm still looking for a solution. I've finally been able to connect to wireless networks with Vista built-in wireless networking, but Access Connections can't connect on its own, and Windows doesn't save login/passwords for my WPA networks, which is really annoying.

If anybody has any suggestions, I'm ready to try anything.

Hi,

I just installed Vista and I'm having the same problem with you with my WLAN - WEP Protected. Access Connections can not connect on it's own without Windows Network configured.

Also it doesn't save the WLAN type Open or Shared.

Very annoying, probably Access Connections still is not finished.

I have it working fine with an Intel WiFi card under Vista Ultimate. Which card do you have in your ThinkPad?

I have the Atheros A/B/G/N card under Vista. Still not working unless Windows wireless networking is configured.

Hi Bill,

I have the same card as yours (Intel 3495ABG) and it is working now, but in let's say in collaboration with Windows Network Stack.

Although the quality is 60%. With WinXPP at the same location it was 100%...very strange

Does it has to do with card power mode, because in Access connections mine is set to "Maximum Power Saving" and it doesn't let me change it

You can change the power saving mode on the "Advanced" tab under the adapter properties in device manager.

yeah I know that. It is in Maximum Power, but in access connections I can't change it.

It might. You can try creating a custom power profile in the Power Manager which will then allow you to set the power mode for the wireless card to maximum power in Power Manager, and be sure it is actually operating in that mode.
