I see no reason to buy a thinkpad now.

I'd say that you're not looking carefully enough, or have never owned one. The IPS display is a serious benefit, but it's just one of many that I appreciate in my system..

NO, it's only a slighly lighter (less weighting, thinner) and a little bit more luminant TMD XGA panel, that's all. See also:

If it would have been LED based, the X60s models with such a panel would have been more expensive. And of course the Lenovo marketing would have let you know and praised that it's LED based.

Yeah, they'd be right behind Microsoft with their Zune marketing campaign - "its all about the social". I guess these companies aren't marketing to geeks!

Thanks for giving a definite answer to my question. Before the X60s was released, I read a preview article claiming that the ultralight LCD would be LED-based. So, either Lenovo changed their mind, or the author of that article had gotten some wrong info.

The writing is on the wall. LED based backlighgting is in the future: lower consumption, color gamut control, etc. and also no more need for a noisy high voltage inverter and delicate backlight high voltage lamp. But it will happen when it makes economic sense, not before. My guess is that high end users will ask for it mostly for the battery life. I'd rather pay another $100 for a LED backlight than for a heavier battery, any day. But it may be a while before the price comes down to that kind of differential.

LED based backlight might be the future but currently suffers from uniformity problems (except high-end monitors with color calibration)
