Bios and Embedded Controller Program not working anymore
Bios and Embedded Controller Program not working anymore
Hello,
I got a "little" problem.
Today I downloaded the new versions of the
Bios (1VET62WW (1.20)) and the Embedded
Controller Program (1VHT28WW (1.04)) for
my sister's R51.
The current versions are 1.17 (Bios) and 1.03 (ECP).
Till now, I had no problems installing those
non-disk updates.
After executing the machine rebooted, the update started,
the system was flashed and then rebooted. I think I did
two Bios Updates and two ECP updates. No Problems at all.
Now it's not working any more. After executing an update
in Windows XP the machine reboots, the blue IBM update screen
doesn't come up, but the machine is rebooting Windows XP with
no change.
I didn't change anything with my Windows Setup or the Bios Settings.
The Bios settings are default (so bios flashing is allowed).
The files are located in c:\Temp\
Original IBM-battery is fully charged 100%.
Can anyone help?
I am also wondering how the non-diskette-update process works.
Is the program loaded to the memory or to a special area on the
hard drive (boot sector or sth.)?
Thanx
Hupsing

I didn't understand your problem:hupsing wrote: After executing the machine rebooted, the update started,

-You updated the TWO Bios and TWO ECP? Why TWO?
-Did WinXP start after the update?
-Did you set the default Bios values as recomended in the Readme?
-Can you enter the Bios settings (F1)?

Hello Zeitgeist,
Thanks for your reply.
When my sister bought the R51 (2888-DG1) the Bios
and the ECP version were quite old.
So I did updates using the files from the IBM homepage.
Some weeks later I did another update for the BIOS
and the ECP. No Problems at all with these updates
(Bios 1.17 and ECP 1.03.
The Problem now is, when I start the latest updates
Bios (1VET62WW (1.20)) and ECP (1VHT28WW (1.04))
in Windows everthing seems fine. I can confirm the messages
of software warning me that I should plug in the AC adapter
and that I need a fully charged battery. OK.
Next the update shuts down Windows and reboots. And then,
the blue update screen doesn't appear. The machine reboots
Windows XP.
And for your questions:
- Over the time I installed two new Bios versions and the
corresponding ECP versions. I always paid attention to the
correct order (according to the IBM homepage).
- Yes Windows started after ever update, no problem. I always
did load the the Bios defaults after updating the Bios and I always
checked the correct ECP version after the update.
- Yes , I can enter the BIOS by hitting F1.
I have no idea why the latest updates do not come up and install
after reboot!

Now I understood your problem, fortunately you didn't destroy your main board.hupsing wrote: After executing an update

Sorry, I have no clue what went wrong. I would try the floppy update if you have an USB drive.

Re: Bios and Embedded Controller Program not working anymore
hey guys,
here's an update to my bios+ecp problems.
i succesfully did all the updates using an external usb floppy drive.
i still don't know why the non-disk udpates didn't work anymore.
maybe the problem ist fixed now, so with the next bios and ecp updates
i will try again the non-diskette versions
and see what happens
but maybe it is a problem of my file system or something, dunno!?
we'll see.
thanx

Hi, last update (I hope).
I think i found a solution for my problems (non-disk ecp- and bios-update not working).
I did a full defragmentation of my harddrive using trial versions of Diskeeper (www.executive.com) and PerfectDisk (www.raxco.com).
I am not sure if a heavy fragmented filesystem was the cause but
some weeks after that I tried to update my bios and it worked!
Hope this helps!
