X200 or T400

#1 Post by drpvd » Sat Jun 06, 2009 11:32 am

I am in the market for a new laptop. I did buy a T400 but the config i selected was too low (low speed)

I was told that x200 might be the way to go. My main need is a fast laptop specially since I work in online advertising and I need to be able to access online web etc. So speed (performance) is very important for me. I use mostly business software but dont want to totally cut off the graphics thing.

So any suggestions between a T400 (with higher config this time) or a X200/300? (my work comp was a x60 which worked very well for me)

Thank you

Well, X200 will definitely not be faster than a T400, and an X300 will be much slower. Furthermore, X200 has integrated graphics.

Unless you need the extra mobility, sounds like you should just get a high-end T400 (2.5GHz+ CPU) with switchable ATI graphics.
Current: Thinkpad 25 (20K7), Yoga 14 (20FY), X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, T60 1952-F76, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

X200S is a very nice ultraportable for Business. The latest models have the Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN), 4GB RAM, and 1.86GHz, 6MB L2, 1066MHz FSB, the 12.1 WXGA+ (1440x900) LED backlight LCD, and an Ultrabase (dock) for the office. Very fast and light to carry around, it weights around 3lbs with a 6 cell battery. I have one for sale in the Marketplace forum here if you are interested.

Thanks

Yes mobility is important but as you said, the Xseries dosent seem to have a higher than 2.5 speed or maybe I am missing something.

for the T400 I am looking at this config

The W series seems powerful but I have no idea or reviews of how well it performs or lives up to expectations

If you are inclined to have the best possible display you can swap an IPS LCD into an X200. Does not work with an X200s. If only an IPS swap was possible for the T500... that would be amazing.

I have an x200s with 2.13Ghz processor, 8GB RAM and X25-M SSD, and it's plenty fast for anything I throw at it; I'm not sure how speed could be a concern for you. I regularly use this machine to do heavy Photoshop and Premiere tasks, and it works phenomenally quickly for the type of machine it is. For web browsing, the processor is just about never the limiting factor anyway.
