Question about X4 dock sliding cover

#1 Post by rkawakami » Fri Apr 24, 2009 4:00 pm

I recently bought this X4 dock for my X41t: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0299098568

As pictured, it shows the sliding cover (with the tri-color IBM logo) which I assume moves to fill in the gap when using the smaller-sized battery. The unit that arrived does not have this cover and I was wondering if there's some other function that it might provide: Here's what mine looks like:

I'm trying to decide whether or not to return the unit. Functionally, it seems to work just fine without the slider.

edit: I've checked the X41 Tablet HMM and this piece is apparently called an "adjuster" and has a separate FRU :?: (26R8537)
edit2: Corrected "Ultrabase" to "dock"

I don't know why they did it that way other than lower cost. It should use a sliding cover like the 2878 type docks. I would just use it.

Received an unexpected present in the mail today:

Now that I see exactly what it is, it does really appear to be a non-essential item. I was thinking that it was a spring-loaded slider like what's on some other docking stations. This is just a plastic cover which is manually moved to one of three positions  .

I picked up a used X41 Tablet and quite naively set out to purchase an X4 UltraBase. After I ordered it, I found the statement in the Thinkwiki that the X4 Ultrabase was "incompatible" with the X41 Tablet. I was quite bummed.
The unit I received was a ThinkPad X4 UltraBase P/N 91P9283; FRU P/N 91P9282. At first sight it appeared to be too small to accommodate the Tablet  but surprisingly it does match up  and dock the Tablet, although it appears quite awkward-there is a gap at the bottom front of the Tablet and the UltraBase of approximately 3/16th of an inch. I assume the non-Tablet X40 and X41's have a slightly smaller footprint and match up to the X4 UltraBase more cleanly.
On testing, the power plug, usb ports and telephone out on the base all work flawlessly
I don't currently have any Ultra Slim devices to test the expansion slot but feel confident
this will work as well.
I guess I'll have to post to the ThinkWiki now

Good news the x4 Ultrabase fits.
But is the stylus compartment usable?

FYI on fitting standard x41 into x4 Dock.

Apparently there is a mark on the Table version to help align with dock.
The standard version is workable if you get the sliding cover in the right place for your battery, should be a small gap, and are careful.
However I suggest marking the side of its case, or the outside of the lid, with white or silver paint (I used a silver marker pen but they tend to be watery for smooth surfaces).

With either dock make sure the computer is fully seated else your optical drive may not work.
