Looks more like the Z60 series :| I sold my Thinkpad Z61M that I had barely bought to buy a Thinkpad R61i it sucks that the R400 R500 are replacing the R line. Hopefully with my warrenty if anything happens I can get my hands on one of them :P

it looks almost identical to the current 15.4" T61p and nothing like a Z-series.

Well they moved the audio and mic jacks to the front, and the USB ports are vertical.

i'm aware of that.   that's why i said it looks almost identical. ;)   if you were to put a T61p and W500 side by side, their overall shapes and dimensions would be extremely close.

Will the W500 be released on 8/5 like the T400/500?

I can't see a clear image of either the front or the right side panel. I see that there is no audio or mike port on the left side.

How do you know they moved the audio and mike port to the front? I far prefer a side placement. Otherwise, the W500 looks like a BETTER T61p in almost every way.

Blu-ray
Camera option
Faster memory
better power management
Larger Intel Turbo-Ram
Better and cooler? graphics chip
8 GB ram capable
WiMAX in near future.

Downside:
Media Card slot now optional
Audio/Mike ports in a worse place.

I'll bet it comes with Vista Ultimate x64 as a pre-installed option also.

I've got no pressing need to replace my T61p this year. If I did, the W500 would please me.

Okay. I zoomed in on the W500 spec sheet and found the audio and mike ports on the front lip.

to save from having to zoom in on a low-res PDF, here are some high-res images of the W500:

That's what a thread in the T400/500 forum said.

Except for the part that it's got a Lenovo logo on the top cover and is still missing Flexview (at least give us the option to put that in ourselves!). It's a gutted T60p.

I'll hold out with my T60p and T42p until both have no parts available at all. At least those have Flexview, 4:3, and don't need a piece of the cover material that makes it look like the logo never existed.

I'm in the same boat. I'm after the W700 myself. Even if it's not IPS, the W700 is apparently the best one out of all the new Thinkpads. I don't need the 180 degree viewing angle, but I would like to watch Bluray movies on it. I wonder how many people have gotten one of those babies.

I read that some people want to exchange the keyboard with one of the T6x series, so does that mean the keyboard has taken a hit as far as not being of as high a quality? I'd like to get a super duper machine if I shell out $3,500 for a W700. Is that too much to ask? lol...

It does appear to be a standard keyboard (the numeric keypad is a separate part#). Note the photo of the back of a W700 keyboard here, showing the white nylon mechanism thru the back, and Part# 42T3970 and FRU 42T4002.

the W700 has more reinforcements than any of the new R/T/W series so there have been very few complaints about the keyboard.   i recently compared two NMB keyboards (T6x and the original) on the W700 and find them each to feel similar.

Placing audio and firewire on the front lip is one of the worst ideas I have seen yet. This will prevent me from buying one. The side for audio is OK, the back for everything else. Nothing on the front. That's where the laptop hits my stomach when I'm listening to music or watching a movie on the plane. The back is a bad place for audio too since it is up against my crossed leg (ankle to knee). The side is OK for audio. And bring back the Stereo line in. Mac Book Pro has stereo line in, Thinkpad did too until Lenovo took over.

What is the fastest 14" thinkpad with at least 512 megs graphics and only trackpoint (if I get an ultranav, I'm going to epoxy over it).

If you really want 14" and only trackpoint - I think you need a 1.2GHz T23 or a T3x.

On a T42/T43 - you can turn off the ultranav or even order a replacement palmrest that covers it up.

I bought the Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds, it's nice. I really like the pop out screen and the finger print reader, and as always, the rugged build of the entire thing. Although I must say since Lenovo took over the production, the ThinkPad has gotten slightly weaker. For example, I was using my W700ds and shifted seating position and had to move the laptop with one hand. It creaked while I was holding it. The case shifted, I never remembered the old IBM ThinkPads to do that.

Well, the old Tpads weren't big 17" monsters, either, so some flex is probably to be expected.
