Windows 7 on x60s - will not resume from sleep

#1 Post by rickster21 » Fri Jul 31, 2009 11:11 am

I have installed Windows 7 OEM using only lenovo drivers and can not get it to resume from sleep. Resume from hibernate works ok. I have tried enabling/disabling hybrid sleep, installing/uninstalling power management driver and power management software as well as reinstalling the OS, with no success. Different bios settings didn't fix the problem either.
There isn't too much info on google about this, most people have problems getting their PCs to sleep, not resuming from sleep.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Try running a powercfg report, which may contain information about why sleep mode does not work. Here is a description of how to create a report.

I ran the report and cleared all but one of the "errors" it found, but it still won't resume from sleep.
Here's the text of the report:

Looks like a normal report and very similar to my X61T. Let's see... to successfully resume from sleep requires that the contents of RAM are refreshed properly so that they are preserved while sleeping. Any chance of having a marginal RAM module? If you have two modules, try one at a time to see.

OK, I only have 2 memory modules in the system so I tried booting up with one at a time and going into sleep mode, but still could not resume.
I also enabled "Diagnostics Boot Mode" in BIOS so that extended tests would be run on RAM and other onboard hardware, and the system booted OK with no errors.
Any other troubleshooting ideas are appreciated.
Thanks

rickster21:

What would probably be most helpful now is for someone else with the same hardware to chime in and tell us if they are able to successfully resume from sleep on an X60S running Windows 7.

I have an x60s (1702-94U) and have no problems resuming from sleep. I'm currently running Windows 7 Build 7100 (RC1).

Do any of you who are having trouble with sleep or hibernation also have the Intel Turbo Memory installed?

I have a T60, and it won't sleep correctly either, the system attempts to shutdown the monitor (went blank, then I can see some activities on the HD and that's it, it just sits there without completing the process.

The system hibernates fine.

I'm using the Beta version of the PM manager and PM driver from Lenovo. I don't have turbo mem.

Are those who are having this problem using the Fn key combinations to invoke sleep or hibernate? What happens if you sleep using the start menu choice?

I uninstalled the Lenovo Power Manager program, and now the computer can sleep with native Windows 7 power manager.

I have an X60 Tablet (6363-2BU), and I am also getting intermittent sleep failures with Windows 7 RTM. This week I sporadically get failed sleep: the monitor will power off, but everything else appears to be active. The HDD light intermittently indicates activity.

I always put it in sleep mode with the lid.

I have Power Manager 2.43 installed. I will try removing that and see what happens. Oddly, I've had that Power Manager installed for a few weeks, so I'm not sure why this suddenly started.

I cannot think of any recent change that would trigger this.

Here an x61T (7764) with Win7 x86 RTM hibernates and resumes from sleep just fine.

After installing Win7 clean, I installed the beta drivers for the system and the normal Vista x86 drivers / ThinkVantage apps that weren't on the beta driver site. I didn't install the Password Manager.

I am amazed that everything on this system works so much better than the Vista preload out of the box.

Updates:

Removing Power Manager 2.43 didn't fix it.

I found a way to consistently reproduce. This is related to how long the laptop has been idle. If the laptop is active--screen on and everything fired up as normal--then sleep mode works. However, if it's idle long enough for the monitor to power off, it cannot sleep.

Strangely, even when it's "trying" to sleep, I can still sign back in using the fingerprint reader, hit the Windows key, then right arrow, then Enter to make it shut down. I get the Windows shut down tone. The hard drive activity light looks like it normally does for the shut down process, but the laptop never powers off. I finally have to force the power off by holding the power button down for 5+ seconds.

EDIT: During the events in the prior paragraph, the screen remains powered off, so I cannot see any errors or other status indicators. And reviewing the Windows System and Application logs turns up nothing useful.

I haven't had this problem since I changed (in Bios setup) to ATA drive compatible mode. I can reproduce the problem everytime by changing it back to SATA mode.

But then, my drive doesn't pass the Fujitsu diagnostic tests, so that might have something to do with it. Might worth a try if you're frustrated with the sleep issue.

If this is indeed true, then we can narrow down the problem to one of the following cases:

1. HD driver problem in Windows 7
2. Power management problem with powering down HD
3. HD needs new firmware (my Fujitsu didn't have any new firmware according to the latest Lenovo firmware update program)
4. Bios needs update for fix the problem

I previously had the laptop set to never fall asleep, even in battery mode. Now I have it back on balanced settings, and it never has a problem falling alseep this way. It appears the problem is limited to user-initiated sleep.

Correction: it has frozen up a few times even on self-initiated sleep. Still don't see rhyme or reason for this.

System Update 4 for Windows 7 just came out. I removed all old Thinkvantage/Lenovo software and let System Update install current versions and still have the problem.

This has recently stopped being a problem. I am not clear if it's because of a fix in Lenovo or Microsoft software.

X301 with W7 64-bit having the same problem (will not sleep, screen dims and it sits there idle). I have a 5400rpm mechanical drive.
Most recent bios, most recent drivers drivers, everything updated. Re-formatted twice to no avail.

Every now and then I can get windows to chime by mashing on the keyboard (it is a windows chime, not a system "beep"). I am pulling my hair out with this problem

At first I thought it was an issue with Rm clock, but after re-formatting it is still happening.

I had this problem with a W500 and a clean install of Windows 7, with the Lenovo Power Manager.

The fix was to open Power Manager, go to Global Power Settings, and under the Events category, tick 'apply to all power plans' and enable all the various sleep/resume triggers (Fn + Fn4, lid closed, power button).

After this, the laptop now sleeps and resumes reliably.

I think the Lenovo Power Manager takes over sleep event management from Windows, but doesn't actually know what to do until you define these defaults.
