ThinkPad Tablet 2 - USB Recovery Media

#1 Post by GadgetRevue » Fri Jun 06, 2014 3:56 pm

Hello,
I recently tried to do a clean recovery (machine kept crashing) and the recovery partition failed. I contacted Lenovo to get a d/l of the recovery media but they wanted $45 for mailing it out to me (out of warranty)

Anyone know a way I can get the ISO of the recovery media so I can make my own USB recovery drive. I was told the 32GB model comes with the media, while the 64GB model puts it in a separate partition on the SSD itself. This is a scam, since the 64GB model costs more and you should get all the space you paid for. Meaning they should provide the same recovery media on USB as the 32GB model.

Thanks!

I agree with you, there..
somehow, through the byzantine machinations of fate and lenovo I have wound up with TWO examples of the thinkpad tablet 2..
and neither have yet needed a recovery.. in spite of having win8 with its gestapo like need for ones personal detailed info..
so i'll take a look and see what I can see and if possible i'll see if I can grab the recovery partition..

meanwhile, welcome to the forum.. :)

looking at the disk i see 5 partitions and only one has a drive letter assigned..
and only one is less than 100% free space and that is the OS C: drive..

i'll look around a bit to see what i can RE-learn..
if all else fails i'll call support and see what i can do to get the media..
both of my thinkpad tablet 2's are 64gig models..

Was there ever any resolution to this? I accidentally messed up my Thinkpad 2 . . . I wanted a clean install of Windows 8 sans all the Lenovo stuff, and I (deliberately) deleted my recovery partition and some other stuff. I can get Windows 8 to install and work decently (I even managed to fix the wifi and such), but it's still not quite the same. I would really like to just do a clean install from the recovery disc/image, but as I said, I deleted that. Yes, I know that was stupid, but I figured I would just make my own recovery USB from my "clean" Windows install. It was poorly planned and a strong indicator of my general lack of experience. Anyway . . . is there any chance anyone managed to make that iso? I would rather avoid the shipping fee from Lenovo.

For anyone who's still interested in this year and a half old thread, I have succeeded restoring one of our Thinkpad Tablet 2s using a USB recovery image created by... our other Thinkpad Tablet 2 using the built in Windows recovery media creator. The biggest hassle was getting it to boot for the USB stick. We did have a working Windows install, so we just rebooted into recovery mode (under settings in Windows) and instructed the Windows boot loader to boot from the stick. Alternatively you can go into the bios (power up while holding the volume up button, then release when you see the Lenovo logo, the bios is text but responds to touch) and set the tablet to boot to USB first.

Only thing is though, the recovery image is the original Windows 8.0 one that shipped with the tablet, so I then had to install a heap of updates, then update it to 8.1 afterward.
