W700 - possible cock-up
W700 - possible cock-up
Guys and Gals,
today i've found nice piece of W700 on a local auction site -QX9300, FHD, WACOM tablet, color calibrator. Everything seems fine beside it does not start . The only feedback it provides is 1long-2short beeps, which appears to be graphic card error msg. Is there any possibility that beside MXM II card motherboards slot might be broken aswell ? And if it is an graphic card, do I have to replace it with Lenovo-branded piece ?

Re: W700 - possible cock-up
Not familiar with that specific beep code, but the graphics card must be a lenovo based one in order to work, otherwise you will get an error (similar to non lenovo wireless card errors). It is a shame, since this closes the door to install newer, more powerful graphics cards in the W700 and W701 models.

Graphic cards from HP also work (from HP laptop model 8730w). The only cards that work are the fx2700m (512mb) and fx3700m (1gb)
I am using an HP card now in my W700. From what I read, the display port in the W700 might not work with an HP card and also read about possible issues with the second screen on the W700DS. If you don't have a W700DS and are not using the display port, you won't have any issues with a good HP card.
These cards need proper cooling or they will fail quickly. Make sure the fan for the graphic card is working good and you are not blocking the cooling ports on the side of the laptop. For example putting the laptop on a soft bed will definitely block your cooling ports.
The HP 8730w is similar laptop to the W700 with the same chipset (PM45). They are usually cheaper to buy than a W700, but they also make a model with ATI graphics (won't work in the W700).
I have purchased an HP 8730w with fx3700m in the past, for a lot cheaper than what an original lenovo fx3700m sells for. I downgraded the HP to a fx2700m card and used the fx3700m to fix my W700. After that, I had 2 good laptops. Still use them today.

Re: W700 - possible cock-up
Indeed- either a Quadro FX 2700M or Quadro FX 3700M will work. NO OTHER MXM-II video cards(GeForce 8800M, 9800M) will work.
I have used multiple FX 2700Ms and 3700Ms from different sourced laptops, and the W700 will power on with them just fine with no issues in Windows. Quadros from both Clevo laptops and HP laptops both work. HOWEVER- I would highly recommend finding a genuine working W700 replacement card if possible, because sometimes the HP and Clevo cards don't seat well underneath the heatsink, and because these cards generate so much heat under load (especially the 3700M) it doesn't take long for them to deseat or de-ball, requiring you to either reseat the graphics card in the MXM-II slot or replace the graphics card entirely.
It is a good idea to buy and run an HP/Clevo FX 2700M for really cheap, and then run it in the W700 for diagnostic purposes and even run off of it for light use for some time, but at some point it's wise to buy a FX 2700M or FX 3700M you plan to stick with, that properly seats under the copper.
The one long, two short on the W700/W700ds is, 99% of the time, in my experience, a deseated or faulty video card. The major tell is if the laptop powers on, most of the indicators will flash normally and then stay on unless you power the laptop off or unplug it. Sometimes the backlight will come on, but nothing will display on the screen. It will remain blank.
With a W700 that exhibits these symptoms: the first course of action would be to disassemble it to expose the motherboard completely(remove palmrest, keyboard, numpad, and speaker cover) and to remove both the CPU and GPU heatsink, and inspect the thermal paste on both. If the thermal paste is sufficient for proper cooling, you're good, and if not... obviously, replace it. Check to make sure the CPU is properly seated- then just go ahead and remove the GPU completely. Visually inspect it, then re-install it. Make sure it's firmly seated and properly positioned. Then reinstall the heatsinks. You can just plug in the keyboard and power on the laptop without reassembling everything else, just make sure you don't short anything. If the laptop powers on just fine, your GPU was just deseated it seems. But if the laptop still beeps, the GPU might need to be replaced.

What about this: http://ridingtheflow.blogspot.com/2011/ ... nd-of.html ?I have used multiple FX 2700Ms and 3700Ms from different sourced laptops, and the W700 will power on with them just fine with no issues in Windows. W700 is different in this aspect?
AFAIK 3700M is still the best card you could possibly fit in MXM 2.1 slot. W701 indeed have MXM 3.0, but with this "small" problem from link above that blocks usage of any non-lenovo cards. It is a shame, since this closes the door to install newer, more powerful graphics cards in the W700 and W701 models.

Re: W700 - possible cock-up
I have read that very article in my research- I myself have personally not owned a W701- but I am aware of the fact it is MXM 3 and have heard other's experiences on here about replacing the video card, so I can confirm that everything that article states about limitations with the W701's video card slot are true. What about this: http://ridingtheflow.blogspot.com/2011/ ... nd-of.html ?
W700 is different in this aspect?
The W700 may not have this same unique VRAM and V-chip communication that limits interchangability to Lenovo-only cards, but the W700 still seems to either be VBIOS or just plain BIOS locked to certain cards, namely... the FX 2700M and FX 3700M. It is currently unknown(at least to me) if any other cards work, but I've tried the 8700M, 8800M, and 9800M, all to no avail. I HAVE physically tried, with trial and error, all different brands of 2700M and 3700M(Clevo and HP) as mentioned, and they all work.
Indeed- I believe the 3700M is still the absolute best card ever made for that slot. The 9800M does use the same G92 core that the 3700M uses, but the 3700M is the only card that has all 128 shaders enabled, giving it the most raw power and the most efficiency. It also means it draws the most power and runs the hottest out of all the MXM 2.1 cards.AFAIK 3700M is still the best card you could possibly fit in MXM 2.1 slot. W701 indeed have MXM 3.0, but with this "small" problem from link above that blocks usage of any non-lenovo cards.
The W701's upgradeability problem is a pretty severe one in my opinion... as the W701 would do amazingly well if upgraded to a GTX 680M, or even something like a 670MX(to better match the FX2800M's power draw and the CPU balancing) but the limitations that the article explains are just too extreme and too daunting. No one wants to mod past that, and there's no extreme need to at the moment. Plus, there's no getting past the first-gen laptop socket Core i-series CPUs, which are becoming increasingly outdated and underpowered for the times.

Is there any difference between the FX 2/3700M used in the W700 and the W700ds?Medessec wrote:Indeed- either a Quadro FX 2700M or Quadro FX 3700M will work. NO OTHER MXM-II video cards(GeForce 8800M, 9800M) will work.

Do the Quadros from the Clevo and HP laptops drive the second screen on a W700ds?
I have a W700ds with a FX 3700M and I'd like to be able to pick up some backup cards if I can find them. I've seen a FX 2700M from a Dell Precision M6400, but I don't know whether it will work on a W700ds.
