Don't want W10? Concerned about privacy? Make sure to kill/uninstall these updates...

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Sun Aug 23, 2015 11:02 pm

First and foremost, a big "thank you" goes to my friend known as Matrix Leader on NBR for all the work that he has put into isolating updates that are affecting our privacy in W7/W8.x and are pushing the W10 "upgrade" on us whether we like it or not...

This is the current list of updates that you DON'T want, along with what they *actually* affect...

KB2952664 (Windows 10 Upgrade preparation)
KB2976978 (Windows 10 Upgrade preparation)
KB2977759 (Windows 10 Upgrade preparation)
KB2990214 (Windows 10 Upgrade preparation)
KB3021917 (Windows 10 Upgrade preparation + Telemetry)
KB3022345 (Telemetry)
KB3035583 (Windows 10 upgrade preparation)
KB3044374
KB3068708 (Telemetry)
KB3075249 (Telemetry)
KB3080149 (Telemetry)

Fortunately these seem to be "optional updates" (on Win 7) so far and I normally don't install those.
Still need to watch for them in case MS decides they are "important".

Thanks George and your friend Matrix Leader from NBR. Can we make this the de facto list for posting info regarding bad updates related to W10?

I can't make it a "sticky" myself - it has to be done by higher-ups here on TPF - but I'll be reaching out to them with such a request sometime soon...

Its already a sticky in the Windows 7 subforum, and this should be enough, as this doesn´t directly concern Windows 10 itself, but rather Windows 7: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=57

I just added a link there to the initial post in this thread. If this post is to be edited in the future with additional information, then the sticky will point here.

"KB2670838 (The EVIL Update, breaks AERO on Windows 7 and makes some fonts on websites fuzzy, Windows 7 specific update only, do not install IE10 or 11 otherwise it will be bundled with them, IE9 is the max version you should install)"

That's from NBR forums. Kind of scary. Seems like that update is a prerequisite for IE10+ and will come bundled with IE updates.

Re: KB2670838 - I think it's kind of bull. This update has been there for a long time. If it was as bad as they say it is, it would have been fixed by now. Certainly all my Win7 computers have it (they also have IE11), and none of them has broken Aero or the other problems.

Saying "IE9 is the max version you should install" is almost equivalent to "you shouldn't use IE at all". As a Vista user (who cannot install anything over IE9), I know that IE9 is already becoming obsolete and incapable of properly rendering an increasingly number of websites.

I was uncertain about that one myself - and since it doesn't directly relate to the W10 update and/or telemetry issues - decided not to list it in the first post.

Due diligence - as always - is up to each and every one of us when it comes to installing updates for *any* operating system, though.

Yesterday I had the first customer already who wanted to rollback from W10-Home to W7-Home.
The forced W10 updates had made his (Compaq Presario CQ62) laptop utterly unusable: boot-loop.
Took me a while to force the rollback and then get rid of all the W10-related junk.
I see some nice moneymaking coming up...

Five of my nine Windows 10 computers had this problem. I was able to fix them all, so they are still running Windows 10. That being said, I am considering reverting my Panasonic Let's Note CF-Y9 to 8.1, because under 10, I am no longer able to use the hotkeys to change screen brightness. Instead, I have to do it through the Control Panel's Power Options.

firstly, i made this thread a sticky..

second, just installed win10 on an old thinkpad X300..

in trying to do a search i find that win10 as installed will NOT allow me to go to google.com OR yahoo.com but WILL allow a search on bing.com..

i can search on bing for google and the usual links are presented, yet clicking on one still yeilds an error message "Hmm, we can't reach this page."..

what to make of this..?

Bill, in a similar vein, it was discovered back in early September that Microsoft, according to Softpedia, "was using Bing to encourage users searching for Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to stick to Edge, displaying notifications saying the company recommends Windows 10 adopters to use the default browser."
(see: http://news.softpedia.com/news/don-t-bl ... 1157.shtml)

Accordingly, it would not surprise me that Microsoft is deploying the same tactic against other search engines.

The problem is that microsoft are proactive in releasing new updates that force Windows 10 on your system.

One of my laptops I was vigilant in using scripts to remove GWX and whatever but new updates have forced it all back.

Win10 on a Thinkpad is like castrating your PC and giving Microsloth the shock collar remote for it. then you end up with a kids cel phone instead. I ditched win10 ASAP went back to win7 and MS can FOAD far as I care for trying such BS. hell who wants to trust a web site that runs the likes of Hotmail etc full of malware and all other nasty stuff with no security/privacy

I can attest that "Take Ownership" is a very useful utility. It should be in every enthusiast's toolbox. Any tool can be "dangerous" if used improperly, so familiarize yourself thoroughly with its capabilities before deploying it.

Yep. That's why I've completely disabled updates on all of my machines. I'd rather deal with random hackers than with this type of nonsense from MS.

Before you freak out over losing privacy, here are detailed explanations of what these updates are for:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2952664
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2976978
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2977759

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3075249
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080149

Six of these eleven updates (KB2976978, KB2977759, KB3021917, KB3022345, KB3068708, and KB3080149) affect only "Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP)." This program has been around for years and has always utilized lots of telemetry, so nothing is new. As long as you aren't participating in this silly program, these updates won't affect you.

Four of the remaining updates merely enable you to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, and to make sure that if you do choose to upgrade, the process would be as smooth as possible. Of course you aren't required to upgrade if you don't want to:
KB2952664: Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7
KB2990214: Update that enables you to upgrade from Windows 7 to a later version of Windows.
KB3035583: This update installs the Get Windows 10 app, which helps users understand their Windows 10 upgrade options and device readiness.
KB3044374: Update that enables you to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

This last one is the only one that can potentially affect privacy:
KB3075249: Update that adds telemetry points to consent.exe in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.

I can see why some people would be scared by this last one, but there is no need to add to the list ten other inconsequential updates and make people eleven times as scared as they should be.

The list has grown a lot longer since I've posted this thread. See here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads ... ry.780476/

Now, although a script has been created by one of NBR Mods that disables all of those unwanted updates, I've performed a fresh install of W7 on all of my machines and just completely disabled *any* updates.

So, no, I'm not freaking out but simply have no time for MS' BS at this point in my life.

Customer Experience Improvement Program updates have reportedly sent data even on machines where the owner is not in the program. I don't understand why such updates are even offered to users not in the program. My preference is to uninstall any such updates.

Until the recent Microsoft shenanigans I had set Windows Update to automatically download updates and notify me they were there. Unfortunately if I shut down the computer these updates would automatically install. Now I set it to not download updates until I review them. In the present environment only security updates get installed here. I haven't signed up for Windows 10, don't want it, and don't want updates that make it easier to install. It is irritating that Microsoft keeps pushing these updates over and over when I don't want them. In some cases looking up the description of a particular update yields almost nothing about what the update really does. Unless things change only security updates get installed here.

Re: Don't want W10? Concerned about privacy? Make sure to kill/uninstall these updates...

Folks, take a look at this article, "The truth about Windows 7 and 8.1 'spy patches' KB 3068708, 3022345, 3075249, 3080149". If you would rather not read the whole thing, here's the punch line: "The Windows 10 data-scraping approach is not moving down to Windows 7 or 8.1, no matter what those headlines and experts may say".

And I bet it is still 90% irrelevant, just like when the list was shorter.

I have been saying this since Windows 10 came out in July: It does have problems, in terms of privacy as well as functionality (driver stability, forced updates, etc.). But the privacy issues are dramatically overblown by bloggers as a clickbait tactic. Rational discussions are helpful, but irrational panic isn't. Remember the ebola scare? The irrational panic was much worse than the disease itself, and the same is true for Windows 10.
